Heroic Boys Saved Themselves From Being Kidnapped By Making Quick-Thinking Call To Police

It’s impossible not to panic when someone is in distress, especially if caught in a life-and-death situation. These circumstances can cause severe stress, making it hard for people to even think about making a move right then and there. Among those situations is unlawful confinement against one’s will or what most people know as kidnapping. But would you believe that there are brave boys out there who are quick-thinking enough to save themselves from such instances?

Believe it or not, three boys aged 7, 12, and 15 called up the police after a man who kidnapped them refused their appeal to let them go.

In November 2022, a 44-year-old man kidnapped three boys outside a Walmart in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. After the father of three got out of an SUV with three kids seated in the back, a man jumped in and took off right away.

The Pennsylvania State Police identified the man as Jason Harris of York Springs.

While the man tried to speed away, the boys continuously asked him to slow down and stop, to no avail — so they called 911 to seek help. As if the boys couldn’t get any smarter, they also made sure to share their location from time to time to inform the troopers about their whereabouts. Yes, and they even gave the troopers directions to find their exact location.

According to court records obtained by The News & Observer, one of the boys in the vehicle told the police that “he believed he was drunk.”

The man headed north on U.S. Route 15 at high speed, according to WHTM.

The troopers then began chasing him. And even though the man drove over 120mph, the troopers were still able to successfully box him in near mile marker 31.9 in York County.

“I opened the door and gave him verbal commands to get out,” one of the troopers wrote in the affidavit. “As he did, the vehicle kept rolling forward until he put it into park,” the trooper added.

The man even caused significant damage after it hit a curb at one point. Luckily, the kids were not injured or harmed.

The man admitted to stealing the car, revealing he ran out of gas and wanted to reach Harrisburg, which is approximately 40 miles northeast of Gettysburg, or the location where he kidnapped the kids.

Authorities handcuffed the man, whom they claimed was “visibly intoxicated.” Among the things that they observed was that “he had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage about his breath ... as well as glassy, bloodshot eyes.” When asked about how drunk he was, the man said: “really drunk, I’ve been drinking a lot man.”

The authorities also confirmed that the boys indeed told the man to stop the SUV, but he refused to do so. He admitted to hearing the boys but chose to ignore them.

According to WHP, the man was charged with kidnapping, endangering the welfare of a child, fleeing and eluding a police officer, theft of a motor vehicle and DUI-related offenses. Unable to post the $50,000 bail, he was committed to the Adams County Prison.

As to the boys, they successfully reunited with their father – and it’s all because of their courage to save themselves. Yes, their safety was all on them!
