A dog in northeastern Thailand is being praised as a hero after saving a newborn baby from a terrible fate.

Ping Pong lives in the village of Ban Nong Kham in the nation’s Chum Phuang District and has faced his own challenges in life. Ping Pong’s owner, Usa Nisaika, told Khaosod English that when the now six-year-old dog was younger, he was struck by a car. The accident left Ping Pong without the use of one of his legs. Despite his disability, Usa says that Ping Pong is an incredibly loving, obedient dog. Ping Pong often accompanies Usa to his job - taking care of cattle -  and is beloved by everyone in the village.

It was when Ping Pong was helping Usa with his cattle that the spunky dog made an incredible discovery.

When Ping Pong approached a cassava field, he knew that something was amiss. Using his powerful sense of smell, Ping Pong discovered something in the dirt. He barked and made his owner aware of the situation.

Usa went to check out what Ping Pong had found and saw a deeply disturbing sight: a leg poking out of the ground.

Usa began digging out the area and was shocked to find a baby boy.

The 5.2 -pound baby was brought to Chum Phuang Hospital, where doctors said that he would be alright. He was very lucky to still be in excellent physical condition, after actually having been buried alive!

Panuwat Puttakam, a police lieutenant colonel, told reporters that the baby had survived because he was buried shallowly, according to The Bangkok Post. He went on to say that his department started an investigation that eventually located the child’s mother, a 15-year-old girl. Puttakam said that the mother would be charged with attempted murder, adding:

“The girl is now in the care of a psychologist and her parents because she is in great fear. She regrets what she did and said she acted on impulse without thinking it through.”

The young mother, he explained, had buried the child because she feared what her parents would say if they learned she had gotten pregnant at such a young age. She is currently undergoing a mental evaluation.

Governor Wichian Chantharanothai of the Nakhon Ratchasima Province said that the girl’s parents have offered to care for the child, but no decision on the issue has been made yet.

In the meantime, Ping Pong’s story has made international headlines, with the dog being hailed as a hero in the community. Speaking with reporters, Usa Nisaika beamed with pride of Ping Pong, amazed that he had saved the little boy’s life.
