Another horrific mass shooting has shattered the peace of the beautiful summer months. A gunman senselessly murdered three people and wounded 12 others at California’s Gilroy Garlic Festival.
During the shooting, a 10-year-old girl earned the reputation of a hero for saving a three-year-old toddler from the gunman.
The shooting took place on Sunday when people were enjoying a fun day out. The Gilroy Garlic Festival is one of the most popular food festivals in the state, attracting over 100,000 attendees each year to raise money for schools and several charities according to the Associated Press.
Wendy Towner and her husband were among some of the vendors who had tents set up for the festival. The couple was selling and offering free honey tasting at their tent for their company "The Honey Ladies."

The gunman cut through a fence to avoid security at the entrance of the festival. Wendy Towner and her husband saw him getting through the fence and told him that he was not allowed to do that. Legan suddenly turned his attention toward the couple and began shooting at them as their young three-year-old son stood by them according to the couples fundraising page.
While Wendy and her husband were both wounded by the gunman's bullets, "Their 3-year-old son was dragged under the table by a brave 10-year-old girl that probably saved his life," Wendy's brother wrote.
Candice Marquez, who works for Wendy and her husband, told the Associated Press the 10-year-old girl was brave for her heroism. Their three-year-old son was fortunately saved by the courageous 10-year-old, while his parents sustained multiple injuries.
The couples' fundraising page gave an update on their health explaining that Wendy was shot once in the leg, and suffered nerve and muscle damage. Her husband's injuries are much more severe as he was hit three times, the most serious causing damage to his femoral artery that will require multiple surgeries.
Their fundraising page also read about what happened after the gunman shot them.
"The shooter then approached closer to Wendy and her husband on the ground and said 'are you alright?' in a very calm tone," Wendy's brother wrote. "They both played possum and did not respond, as he probably would have finished the job. The shooter then turned and continued on to the next group of people."
We are thankful Wendy and her husband survived this horrible tragedy and we hope for a speedy recovery for both of them. What do you think of how the ten-year-old girl saved the toddler from the gunman? Tell us below. Spread the word about this girl's act of heroism.
