Pit bulls get such a bad rap. According to the BSL census (Breed Specific Legislation), they are banned in 10 states, and in 12 countries altogether. They are largely perceived to be a vicious and aggressive breed but luckily, this story might just bring a change of heart.

According to a facebook post by the Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office, authorities received a call on Tuesday from a frantic mother who reported that her child has gone missing. He had been playing outside with his siblings and Buddy, the family dog.

The Suwannee Correctional Institution activated their officers and a K9 unit to begin the search for the missing boy, until they got a call from one of the family’s neighbours that the toddler was found, but Buddy wouldn’t let them anywhere near him.

Buddy didn’t trust the neighbours, but he led the deputies to his lost owner when they arrived on scene, as seen in bodycam footage obtained by WCTV Eyewitness News. It was as if he understood the policemen’s authority, and believed that they wouldn’t do anything to harm his little human.

Police said that the child was not hurt in the ordeal, and the family including Buddy, are doing well.

“It was such a good ending to something that could have been tragic,” Sheriff Sam St. John told the local news outlet. He said they were putting out tragic news all the time, and that it felt “so good, so good” to finally share a good story.

“Fortunately, we were able to reunite the child with his mother, thanks in part to ‘man’s best friend’ and an alert neighbor,” the Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office wrote on social media, along with the hashtags #givethatdogabone, #mansbestfriend” and #LassieaintgotnothingonBuddy.” There’s a dog who lives up to his name!

Dogs are incredibly loyal, and Buddy is the epitome of loyalty. Do you think the ban on pit bulls or any dog breed for that matter is too harsh?
