Marina Fuentes, a nanny based in Washington DC is being hailed as a hero after she risked her own life to save those of the two young children she was looking after that day.

Fuentes fell victim to a hit-and-run last month when the suspect, who was driving a stolen car, sped onto the sidewalk and struck her as she shielded the 2 and 7-year-old children from the collision. The children were not seriously injured thanks to their nanny’s quick thinking.

"I got in front of the little girl, and I hear a bump in the back," Fuentes told NBC’s News4 in a phone interview from the hospital.

She was badly injured in the collision and is now in pain due to her broken bones, but is thankful the children are safe.

"I look down and got the stroller with baby and wrapped it with my hands, with my arms to my chest," she explained.

Fuentes has since undergone one surgery and potentially has more ahead of her. Unfortunately, it is unclear if she will be able to go back to work.

"I feel like my life is ended. I feel I’m not going to have the same quality of life after this," Fuentes told reporters.

Claire Keller, a close friend of the nanny who used was babysat by Fuentes herself as a child, has since set up an online fundraiser to help with the medical costs.

"She loves the kids she takes care of, and we all know it," Keller told News4, before adding that it is no surprise Fuentes risked her life for the two children.

"She is extremely protective of the kids in her care," she added.

According to the local authorities, the suspect stole the vehicle from a local food delivery driver, Denis Miranda. Miranda was also hit at the dramatic scene while struggling with the robber to get his car back and is currently in hospital with serious injuries.

An online fundraiser has also been set up for Miranda for his own costs.
