“Priscilla,” the 2023 film written, produced and directed by Sofia Coppola, was released just a year after Baz Luhrmann’s drama, “Elvis.” The two are connected as they reflect on the lives of the “King of Rock ‘n’ Roll” Elvis Presley, and his wife of six years, Priscilla Presley. While “Elvis” is based on the rock icon’s life, childhood and career, Coppola’s “Priscilla” is based on Priscilla’s 1985 bestselling memoir, “Elvis and Me: The True Story of the Love Between Priscilla Presley and the King of Rock N' Roll.”
In February 2025, the 79-year-old Priscilla shared her thoughts on Coppola’s movie during a panel discussion at MegaCon Orlando. She explained how the movie came about and how she and Coppola came into contact:
“Sofia Coppola called me – and she actually called me and I had never really met her – and said to me that she wanted to do a film about Elvis and I,” she said.
She added that Coppola reached out to her as a courtesy to inform her of her intentions, and said she lacked any reservations as she was already a fan of the famed director, saying:
“Just to warn me that she was going to do it, but not to worry. I mean, I wouldn’t anyway. I love her work.”
Priscilla, who had one daughter with Elvis, the late Lisa Marie Presley, also revealed that she was “quite honored” that the director wanted to adapt her story to the big screen.

Priscilla has taken several opportunities to praise Coppola and the movie “Priscilla” at promotional events. At a Q&A event at the South Point Casino in Las Vegas in November 2023, Priscilla revealed her feelings towards the movie:
“I was very concerned about this movie,” Presley revealed. “I think it’s right on, to be honest with you.”
She also had kind words for Coppola, saying:
“She has such a big heart and her father is very famous and she really connected with me… I have no problems with what she did in any way.”
Priscilla’s connection with Coppola may have significantly influenced her positive attitude towards the movie.
“I love her filmmaking. I think she does a great job. She is for women, and when she approached me about doing a movie about me, I was moved by it,” Presley, who had a hand in producing the film, said, adding, “If anyone were to do a movie, it would be for her. I would never support another movie from anyone else doing it.”
While Priscilla generally had positive things to say about Coppola’s film, she revealed one thing about “Priscilla” that she didn’t quite agree with.
“The only thing was the ending. I wasn’t really happy about the ending,” Priscilla said. “It didn’t end that way, and we ended – Elvis and I ended very lovingly.”
According to Priscilla, she and Elvis continued to have a good relationship even after their divorce in 1973.
“We still we kept our relationship. We did. He would drop by my home unannounced, and I was going with someone by the way, and he would come unannounced,” she said. “Thank God it was two o’clock in the morning, and I knew who it was, so I quickly tried to get to the door before he rang the doorbell, and of course he came in, we went in the kitchen, we talked for a couple of hours.”
Since its release, “Priscilla” has received overwhelmingly positive reviews and several accolades.
