Helena Bonham Carter Is Tired of Society's Obsession with Aging: 'So Much Else We Should Worry About'

Feb 08, 2023 by apost team

Helena Bonham-Carter has had enough of people making a fuss about her age, shutting down people who think it's a crime for people to age. For the award-winning actress, there are more things people should worry about than obsessing about one's age.

Bonham Carter is more recently known for her performance as Princess Margaret, a role that is critically acclaimed for being incredibly realistic and reminiscent of the princess.

However, Bonham Carter has previously attributed her connection to Princess Margaret to much more than simply being interested in the historical figure. In past interviews, she mentioned meeting Princess Margaret by contacting her spirit through psychic mediums.

Though Bonham Carter has a history of contacting Princess Margaret's spirit by using psychic mediums, she has actually had contact with the princess. They met briefly twice but were never friends or even acquaintances. For example, Bonham Carter went to Windsor when she was 30 and ended up meeting the princess, who subsequently said that Bonham Carter should continue acting because she was quickly improving, according to Variety.

This interaction had a great influence on Bonham Carter and convinced her that she could continue chasing her dreams. Since that interaction, her acting career has continued to develop, and she has become a deeply wise celebrity who is not afraid to share her perspectives on life and the world.

No matter how her private life is interpreted by the press, Bonham Carter has learned to never stop fighting for what is right. Since her acting career began, she has become one of the most influential actresses in the entertainment industry.

In February 2023, Bonham Carter appeared on BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour, where she opened up about her frustrations with the way women are being regarded based on their age.

Given that her role in "The Crown" is only the latest in a long career of critically-acclaimed roles, it's clear that Bonham Carter will continue to have a bright future.

During Bonham Carter's appearance on BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour, the actress got candid about society's obsession with aging.

Bonham Carter pointed out that people seem to think that it's shameful for people to age when it shouldn't be the case at all.

"Every single magazine, Instagram, anything, it's all about thou shalt not age," Bonham Carter said. "It's a dirty word, aging. We're all obsessed with it, it's sort of pathological. It's almost a crime, the shame attached."

Although Bonham Carter is reaching 60, she believes aging should be synonymous with reaching one's prime and not the other way around.

"It would be great if we could change our societal rules and say, 'Come on, we're in our prime in our 60s: We've got everything and we're coming into our power,'" she said.

She added by saying that there are more things people should worry about – and aging is not one of them.

"At the end of the day, you can get really obsessed. We can't actually control what we look like, but we think we can, and in fact there's so much else we should worry about," she remarked.

While some people wish to turn back time and go back to their younger years, it's the opposite for Bonham-Carter.

"I'm definitely the cliché of saying I'm miles happier than I was when I was younger," she said.

"I don't ever want to go back there."

While people might have noticed a change in her physical appearance, Bonham Carter said what's important is she remains attractive on the inside on top of her being an interesting and dynamic person.

"My envelope may be less strictly aesthetically pleasing, but on the inside, I'm much more interesting and dynamic — and, I think, attractive," she continued.

Having been given the opportunity to star in the ITV drama "Nolly," Bonham Carter said she couldn't be more thankful for getting the offer to take on the titular role at her age.

"So far it's going well," Bonham Carter said.

"The fact I got Nolly I was thinking, 'God, I'm so lucky at my age to get this part,' which is frankly one of the best parts I've been offered and at my age."

While it makes Bonham Carter sad knowing she still has the need to apologize for her age, she said the rise of streaming services makes her happy because it gives people her age the opportunity to star in movies and TV shows.

"Then part of me thought how sad that I even have to apologize for my age. It's getting better, it is getting better. For one, I think it's getting better for everyone because of the amount of streaming services — it's the age of telly, isn't it? All these things are being made," she remarked.

If there's one important lesson Bonham Carter that can be considered as a great takeaway from her interview, it's that it doesn't matter what other people say about you as long as you're happy and blessed in life.
