"Mary Did You Know?" is a modern-day Christmas song that is sure to become a classic, sung for generations to come. It was written by Mark Lowry in 1984 and first recorded in 1991 by Michael English. The song has been covered by many groups over the years, but the haunting rendition by the a capella group Pentatonix is like no other.

It took Mark Lowry seven years to perfect the lyrics to this song. The idea first came to Lowry when he was working on a Christmas show for Jerry Fallwell. He started to think about what Mary must have felt and thought when an angel told her she was going to give birth to God's son, as reported here at Songfacts.com.

He came up with some questions she may have asked or wanted to ask, and these eventually became the lyrics to this beloved song that has touched so many hearts. Once you hear Pentatonix's cover, your heart will be touched as well.
The lyrics involve asking Mary if she knows of the many incredible feats that one day her son Jesus will perform, such as bringing sight to a blind man and going on to lead large groups of people.
Some of the last questions Mary is asked by the singer, as also sung by Pentatonix, are:
"Mary did you know that your baby boy is Lord of all creation?
Mary did you know that your baby boy would one day rule the nations?
Did you know that your baby boy is heaven's perfect lamb?
That sleeping child you're holding is the great I Am"

The simple and yet elegant music video to their a capella song features Pentatonix standing in a natural rock formation, holding candles. Even more candles are arranged around the group, forming a simple but stunning backdrop to their voices.
Throughout the song, the singer's faces are put into focus. There are no flashy added effects or anything else; the attention rests solely on the wonderful performance we are given. Merely by changing the camera angle does the background change in order to create a wonderful, halo-like effect of natural sunlight behind the performers. Pentatonix does not need any more special effects; their voices are already special enough.
