During an interview with Jimmy Kimmel in 2018 the late Kobe Bryant opened up about his daughter following in his footsteps of becoming a professional basketball player. The touching interview has resurfaced following Kobe and his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna's deaths in a tragic helicopter accident this past weekend.

L.A. Lakers legend Kobe Bryant died after his private helicopter, transporting not only him but his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, crashed in Calabasas, California on Sunday. The helicopter also contained another 7 passengers who did not survive the fatal crash. TMZ reports the group was en route to Mamba Academy near Thousand Oaks, California, for basketball practice when the helicopter crashed.

In the 2018 interview, Kobe gushed over his 13-year-old daughter whose basketball team he coached. Kimmel asked Kobe, "Do you think your daughter might wanna play in the WNBA?" Kobe replied, "She does for sure. This kid, man. Dude, man, I’m telling you."

Kobe goes onto explain how Gianna always reminded Kobe he doesn't need to have a son for his legend and tradition to be continued. "The best thing that happens is when we go out, and fans will come up to me and she’ll be standing next to me, and they’ll be like, 'You gotta have a boy, man. You and [your wife, Vanessa] gotta have a boy. Have somebody carry on the tradition, the legacy,'" he said.

“And [Gianna is] like, ‘Oy! I got this! You don’t need no boy for that, I got this,'” Bryant says, laughing. “I’m like, ‘That’s right, yes you do. You got this.'” Bryant left behind three daughters and his wife of 18 years, Vanessa Bryant.

Kobe told Kimmel about how he had a great time bringing Gianna to a Lakers game. "We just had so much fun because it was the first time I was seeing the game through her eyes," Bryant said.

"It wasn’t me sitting there you know as an athlete or a player or something like that, and you know it’s like about me, and I don’t like that. It was her. She was having such a good time."
