What would you do if a person's life were in danger and you could do something to save the person? Would you harm one person to save another? What if person threatened were a member of your family? These were questions one family had to face when they went searching for one of their own who had gone missing.

There is not always time to call 911 and wait for help. The legal system recognizes the fact that there are occasions when deadly force is justified. Sometimes, a person who takes that step is even commended for acting quickly.

Abducted By Her Ex-Boyfriend

One family's ordeal began when a 29-year-old woman, Bethany Arceneaux, was seen being dragged out of her car in a parking lot. An acquaintance witnessed the abduction by Arcenaeaux's ex-boyfriend, Scott Thomas, and the father of her 2-year-old. Arceneaux already had a restraining order against the man. Arceneaux asked the acquaintance to take her son, and the acquaintance did. The ex-boyfriend then drove away with Arceneaux in his car.

The Search Begins

The family put up fliers to no avail. Thomas' car was found by police in a field, but although they searched it, there were no clues as to his or Arceneaux's whereabouts. The family checked out the car too. While they were there, some people told them about an abandoned house near the field.

A Deadly Showdown

A friend, a neighbor and six family members went to investigate. They heard someone inside screaming for help as they arrived. Arceneaux's brothers kicked the door down to the sight of Thomas stabbing her repeatedly. A family member pulled a gun and shot Thomas dead. Arceneaux survived, and no charges were filed against the person who fired the fatal shot.
