After spawning one of the most successful franchises in history, including books, movies, and even an entire amusement park, J.K. Rowling earned so much that she made it to the Forbes billionaire list. However, the “Harry Potter” author has recently dropped off the list because this kind-hearted individual has donated so much of her earnings to charity.

The worldwide Harry Potter phenomenon made Rowling a very rich woman — at one point she was richer than the Queen — but it wasn’t without a struggle at first. She was a single mother living in Edinburgh from state benefits writing in cafes until she cranked out every chapter of “Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone” Business Insider reports. Once the book was published in 1997, her life changed.

By 2004, she was on the Forbes billionaire list among business magnates and oil tycoons. Along the way she gave away large percentages of her income and eventually it became such a large amount that she fell off the list.

She once said “I think you have a moral responsibility when you’ve been given far more than you need, to do wise things with it and give intelligently,” The Telegraph reported.

Rowling champions causes through her own charities including Lumos, which helps place orphans with families and the Volant Charitable Trust, which works with women and children in Scotland. The Evening Standard reports that she also contributes to One Parent Families, Shannon Trust, Dyslexia Action, and more. It is estimated that she has donated a total of $160 million

It is clear that J.K. Rowling has a big heart, and it is refreshing to see a billionaire give away their money to worthwhile causes. There must be thousands of people who have benefited from her donations, and we commend her efforts.
