After Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's bombshell announcement about stepping back as 'senior' members of the royal family, the media and public have been scrambling to discover what this will mean for the future. The couple announced they will be splitting their time between Canada and the U.K., leading many Canadians to believe they will have to foot the Sussexes' security bill. However, it is reported that Meghan and Harry will be partly paying for this bill as well.
According to the Telegraph, the couple has offered to foot their security bill if they become commercially successful. Security experts told The Mirror that Justin Trudeau’s government in Canada will be legally obligated to provide security for Meghan and Harry because of their royal status.
Larry Busch, an ex-Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) who did security for royals in Canada said, “I don’t believe they can refuse the government of Canada’s security." Another security expert Mike Zimet believes this bill could run into the millions.

An online petition started by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation was signed by more than 80,000 Canadians asking that taxpayers not pay for Meghan and Harry's security while they're in the country.
Canadian users on Twitter have voiced their outrage at the possibility of Meghan and Harry coming to Canada. One user wrote, "Two freeloaders wanting to come to Canada to further burden the taxpayers of this country. Stay where you are, we don’t want you.”
While another said, '“Canadian taxpayers could be on the hook for millions of dollars a year in security expenses if Britain's Prince Harry and his wife Meghan move there, even part-time,'"Which is, one of many reasons, why we don’t want them here!!"
It has been circulating in the media that Trudeau could make Harry the country's governor-general. While many people are outraged on social media, a poll by Dart and Maru/Blue found 60 percent of Canadians said they would back the Prince as governor-general.
However, on Twitter, one user said, "The governor-general gets a salary for life. No way do I want to see Harry living off the Canadian taxpayer for the next multiple decades."

John Wright who is a partner at Dart told the National Post, "There’s enthusiasm for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle because in many ways, they’re celebrities." Because of Meghan and Harry's status and the way they have tried to carve a life out of their own makes for Canadians looking forward to him becoming part of the country's government.
“Young people are more engaged with (this couple)” than other members of Britain’s royalty, Wright said. Canadians aged from 18 to 34 showed their support of Harry becoming governor general with 62% of the poll. 1,515 were surveyed on January 6 about Harry's possible position, this gives the poll a fairly high accuracy chance.
