Harry And William Made Their Mother Diana Touching Promise As Kids

The first official statue in honor of Diana, Princess of Wales is being unveiled today by her sons Prince William and Prince Harry at the Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace. Coinciding with what would have been her 60th birthday, the tribute to the late princess was announced back in 2017 on the 20th anniversary of her death but was pushed back due to the ongoing pandemic. Unveiling the statue together today, Harry traveled to the U.K., especially for the event.

As tensions have been high in the royal family ever since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's controversial interview with Oprah Winfrey in March, the topic of the brothers' relationship has been at the fore. Reunited for the first time since the interview at Prince Philip's funeral in April, it appears the meeting may have served as a segue towards reconciliation for the brothers. Some reports stated that the body language between them, assessed by body language analyst Adrianne Carter, potentially signaled that Harry and William are taking the first steps to heal the rift between them.

It's poignant then that their next meeting revolves around their beloved mother, as royal historian Robert Lacey reported in his book "Battle of Brothers: William, Harry and the Inside Story of a Family in Tumult" that Diana made her sons promise when they were younger they would always remain best friends and not let anybody get between them.

In 2017, the princes also commissioned the documentary "Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy." It's clear that their mother is a strong uniting factor in their lives and perhaps, even in death, she will be the reason behind repairing their relationship. Let's take a look.

Despite their differences, Prince William and Prince Harry often take a united front when it comes to their mother. In the last years especially, they've dedicated themselves to honoring her memory, with the statue that's being unveiled today a major tribute, as well as two documentaries about her life.

However, when it comes to other areas of their lives, the brothers have noticeably drifted apart. Now that the rift between them appeared to reach a high following Harry and Meghan Markle's controversial interview with Oprah Winfrey, it seems that they could be headed for reconciliation. This is something that undoubtedly their mother Diana, Princess of Wales, would have wanted. In fact, it appears that she made them promise as much when they were young.

In his 2020 book, "Battle of Brothers: William, Harry and the Inside Story of a Family in Tumult," royal historian Robert Lacey writes about the brothers' bond they'd developed in early childhood and teenage years. After speaking with Diana's psychic Simone Simmons, Lacey details that Diana even made her sons promise to always remain "best friends" no matter what happened. As reported by Express, in the book Simmons claims Diana said to her sons:

“You must promise me that you will always be each other’s best friends. And never let anyone come between you.”

Simmons also stated:

“Both boys promised they would keep to that ... They high-fived each other and gave their mother a big cuddle."

She adds that "anybody would have melted at the sight." Following their big promise to their mother and each other, William and Harry went outside to play soccer.

The promise a mother asked of her two sons is incredibly moving, especially knowing what we do regarding the brothers' falling out in recent times. This is why their potential reconciliation feels even more meaningful — even decades after her death, Diana is still possibly the driving force behind the brothers wanting to remain close.

For the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Diana's death in 2017, William and Harry also commissioned two documentaries to honor their mother's life. In "Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy" the brothers spoke for the first time about Diana as their mother. Revealing precious family photographs and sharing memories, the documentary also honors Diana's charity work. In it, William stated:

"We felt incredibly loved by her, and I’m very grateful that the love still feels there ... It feels like a good time to remember her and hopefully provide a different side."

Meanwhile, Harry said in the documentary:

"It was that love, even though she was on the other side of the room, as her son you could feel it."

There's no denying that Diana absolutely adored her sons and only wanted the best for them in life. Part of her wish was that they would remain very close throughout their lives, and while that might not necessarily be true of the last few years, it does appear that William and Harry are making attempts at repairing their relationship. The fact that it could well be their beloved mother who is behind their intentions to get close once again is incredibly heartwarming.
