Harrison Ford is one of the most accomplished actors of all time. When you combine the worldwide gross of all of his films since 2019, the total comes to $9.3 billion. He has been nominated for several awards and won the AFI Lifetime Achievement award, as well as the Cecil B. DeMille award. He is still known as one of the top leading men in Hollywood despite being in his late 70s.

Ford is best known for playing Han Solo in the “Star Wars” films and Indiana Jones in the franchise of the same name. He plays the perfect brooding action hero and doesn’t seem to be slowing down. Some of his other popular films include “Blade Runner,” “The Fugitive” and “Air Force One.”

Ford has been married three times in his life. He has four children biologically and one adopted son. He has been married to Calista Flockhart since 2010. The couple began dating after meeting at the 2002 Golden Globe Awards. Their son, Liam, was adopted the year before Flockhart met Ford. The family lives together on an 800-acre ranch in Jackson, Wyoming.

Ford is also a licensed pilot and owns multiple planes and helicopters. On many occasions, he has been contacted by local authorities in Wyoming to use his helicopters in rescue missions. He started flying in the 1960s after taking a few lessons in college. Among his large collection of planes is the Cessna Citation Sovereign 680. This business jet is worth $18.8 million, and Ford’s plane is a striking hunter green color. Ford was born in July of 1942 in Chicago, Illinois. His father was former actor and advertising executive, John William “Christopher” Ford. His mother, Dorothy Nidelman, was a radio actress. Ford has a younger brother, Terence, who was born in 1945.

Ford graduated from Main East High School in Park Ridge, Illinois. He was the first to broadcast his voice on his school’s radio station, WMTH. He was the radio station’s first sportscaster as well. Ford attended Ripon College in Ripon, Wisconsin and studied philosophy. He took a theater class in his last semester to help get over his shyness and he ended up falling in love with acting.

Ford is a former member of the Boy Scouts of America and even reached the second-highest rank of Life Scout. Growing up, Ford worked as an assistant counselor at Boy Scout Camp Napowan in Wisconsin.

He spoke with Parade Magazine about the experience. He said, “My task that summer was digging a terrarium and lining the walls with wooden stakes and acquiring a collection of snakes and turtles and amphibians to go in it. It served me well when I came to (be) Indiana Jones and had not developed a fear of snakes.” Ford must have first found his love for the outdoors when spending so much time in the Boy Scouts as a child.

Ford is also an avid environmental activist. He is the vice-chair of an American environmental organization called Conservation International. The organization is headquartered in Virginia and focuses on protecting and conserving nature. Ford has also filmed a number of environmental documentaries and speaks out against climate change whenever he gets the opportunity. In 2019, he gave an impassioned speech at the U.N. Climate Summit.

After dropping out of college, Ford went on to spend a summer acting in plays with the Belfry Players in Wisconsin. In 1964, he went to Los Angeles to search for jobs doing radio voiceovers. He didn’t have much luck with that, but after some time signed a contract with Columbia Pictures that earned him $150 a week for playing small roles in movies.

His first credited role came in 1967 in the western film “A Time for Killing.” He is credited in the film as Harrison J. Ford, despite not having a middle name. This was meant to help avoid confusion with a silent actor also named Harrison Ford. Ford later dropped the initial when he started working for Universal Pictures

When working for Universal, Ford went on to be featured in several television series. He portrayed mostly minor roles from the late 1960s to the early 1970s. He went on to play a number of small and uncredited roles in films as well during this time.

In a New York Times article about the story of Ford's early career, it was claimed that Ford wasn't happy with the way his career was heading as an actor, so he decided to instead become a carpenter. In an interview with GQ, he said about becoming a carpenter, “I knew how to run the tools. I knew how to cut a straight line. I cared that it was straight—which was the biggest part of it. My dad had a little workshop in our basement and we'd done some work together.”

A casting director named Fred Roos championed Ford and was able to secure him an audition with George Lucas. That was the audition for the role of Bob Falfa, who Ford portrayed in the film “American Graffiti” in 1973. Ford and Lucas developed a strong bond and Ford’s career benefited from the relationship greatly.

It was because of “American Graffiti” that Lucas decided to cast Ford as Han Solo in his space opera “Star Wars” in 1977. Speaking with Parade on his career, Ford said, “Persistence is certainly something I think I can credit myself for having. I was not an overnight success. I spent 15 years before I had any real, noticeable success.”

After “Star Wars,” Ford gained even more recognition as Indiana Jones in the franchise of the same name. “Raiders of the Lost Ark” is the name of the first film in the series, which was released in 1981. The franchise comes from the famous director, Steven Spielberg. The films center on archeologist, Indiana Jones, as he tracks down ancient artifacts and fights bad guys – all with a pretty girl on his arm.

According to Variety, a new movie in the Indiana Jones franchise is set to be released in July of 2022. The title of the movie has not yet been released but it will be the fifth installment in the series. Variety also said that the new film will star actor Mads Mikkelson alongside Ford.

By the end of the 1980s, Ford had become a household name. He spoke about why he loves acting with GQ and said, “I'm attracted to stories, and I like the way they're built, and I like the way they tell us something that's worth telling… I like to hear a good story or a good joke. I discovered that when I started to act.”

In 1982, Ford continued his success as a leading man in the film “Blade Runner.” He portrays the main character, Rick Deckard, a former police officer that is tasked with the job of tracking down bioengineered humans called “replicants.” The film is a futuristic nod to the murder mysteries of film noir and features stunning visuals that caused the film to stand out among its peers.

In the 1990s, Ford had the opportunity to play the character, Jack Ryan, in a series of films based on the popular novels by Tom Clancy: “Patriot Games” and “Clear and Present Danger.”

Both films also star Ford’s previous “Star Wars” costar, James Earl Jones. Ford continued to star in action films like “The Fugitive” and “Air Force One.”

In 2017, Ford reprised his role of Rick Deckard in the highly publicized “Blade Runner 2049.” The film acts as a sort of sequel to the original and also stars Ryan Gosling. Ford told the story from the set of the movie, “I punched Ryan Gosling in the face, (well) Ryan Gosling's face was where it should not have been.” He told GQ, “His job was to be out of the range of the punch.”

“My job was also to make sure that I pulled the punch. But we were moving, and the camera was moving, so I had to be aware of the angle to the camera to make the punch look good. You know, I threw about a hundred punches in the shooting of it, and I only hit him once.” The film was a critical success and earned Ford many positive reviews.

Ford’s most recent film, “The Call of the Wild,” is also based on a famous novel. The film is based on the book by the same name from author, Jack London. Ford portrayed the role of a prospector, John Thornton. The film was released in February of 2020 and opened to mixed reviews.

Outside of acting and the environment, aviation is one of Ford’s greatest passions. The actor is licensed to fly both fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters. He has been involved with a few rescue missions involving his helicopter. In one example, Ford rescued a 20-year-old hiker who was dehydrated and stranded on Table Mountain in Wyoming.

He is an honorary council member for the non-profit organization, Wings of Hope. Ford is also involved with the charity program, Young Eagles, which takes young people out flying for free. When asked by Parade about all of his charitable work he responded, “With a sense of social responsibility. It’s what one does. I say simply, ‘Learn how to be useful, it’ll take a lot of the mystery out of life.’” Ford sounds like a genuinely good person.

He first took flying lessons after high school, but couldn’t afford to continue at the time. He told Parade, “I think it was 11 bucks an hour for the airplane and the academy instructor,” he said. “So I didn’t fly again until I was much, much older.” He received his license to fly when he was in his 50s.

Wyoming, where Ford lives with his family, has some of the best views for flying. With its wide-open skies and mild climate, it makes for the perfect place to enjoy nature. In the same interview with Parade, Ford spoke about flying and other activities he enjoys outside of work: “Well, if my chores are done and there’s nothing more pressing and the weather’s good, I’ll go flying—I love to fly up there—or walk in the woods, do some work, ride my road bike or mountain bike.” Life on Ford’s Wyoming ranch sure sounds like paradise.

One of Ford’s many planes, the Cessna Citation Sovereign 680, is a powerful American business jet. It is capable of a 3,200 nautical mile range and has a top speed of 525 miles per hour. Back in 2019, Ford and his family were seen boarding the stunning plane. The jet is hunter-green with a tan leather interior. The plane requires two pilots so he must always have someone with him in the cockpit while operating it.

One of Ford’s helicopters, the Bell 407GX, is painted in the same shade of green with gold detail. He may not seem like a flashy man, but Ford clearly has style. This is the same helicopter he used to rescue the dehydrated hiker.

In an interview with the DailyMail Ford said, “Flying is like good music: it elevates the spirit and it's an exhilarating freedom, it's not a thrill thing or an adrenaline rush; it's engaging in a process that takes focus and commitment.” It is clear he takes the responsibility of flying very seriously but isn’t afraid to enjoy himself. He also said, “I'm so passionate about flying, I often fly up the coast for a cheeseburger.”

Ford is a man of many talents. He can act, fly planes and is a loving father and husband. At 78-years-old he shows no signs of slowing down. Fans can look forward to the upcoming “Indiana Jones” film that is set to be released in 2022. If looking for more signs of Ford, one only needs to look to the sky and check for a beautiful green plane.
