Guy Uninvites Fiancée’s Family From Wedding After They Make Wedding Dress Shopping Entirely About Sister

Couples have a lot to look forward to as they plan their wedding together. From picking out decorations to deciding on a venue and choosing the perfect first dance song, there is a lot of planning involved when it comes to this special day. With so much work to get done, couples typically turn to their friends and family members to help them make some of the tough decisions and make everything run as smoothly as possible.
One of the most exciting parts of planning a wedding on the bride’s end is picking out her wedding dress. Everyone has their own sense of style and budget, and it can be overwhelming to see so many options, so most brides bring their family, friends or bridal party with them. However, this doesn’t always go as planned.
One man went to Reddit in October 2021 to talk about the horrible experience his fiancée faced when she went dress shopping with her parents and sister. Rather than help the soon-to-be bride, the parents and sister spent all of their time picking out a dress for the sister who wasn’t even in a relationship.
When the fiancée got home, she was in tears, so the original poster (OP) knew that he had to do something to make her feel better. Fed up with how his future in-laws acted, the OP decided to uninvite all of them from the wedding. This has since caused a huge ripple in his fiancée’s side of the family, which led the OP to turn to Redditors for advice on moving forward.
An Emotional Appointment

Starting off his Reddit post, the OP explained that his fiancée went dress shopping with just her parents and sister since she was required to have a small appointment with the bridal shop she picked. Most of her friends lived in other states, too, which is why they couldn’t come.
“My fiancée got home from the appointment in tears,” the OP said. “She said when they got to the bridal store her sister was looking at dresses instead of paying attention to the appointment and then their parents, especially their mother, started looking with her and she started trying on dresses herself and then her parents bought her sister a dress.”
Not only was it an issue that the parents were more focused on the sister than the bride herself, but also the sister wasn’t engaged. She wasn’t even in a relationship. On top of that, the OP’s future in-laws previously mentioned that they wouldn't be able to financially help with the wedding, but the dress they bought for the fiancée’s sister was more expensive than the fiancée’s personal budget.
The OP explained, “Her parents called me a few hours later to ‘warn’ me my wife got emotional and dramatic at the appointment. I told them that both of them and her sister were no longer invited to the wedding because of their actions.”
Typically, the OP wouldn’t intervene with his fiancée’s family issues, but he felt like he needed to step in to protect his fiancée from getting hurt again. However, he also let her know that she could re-invite her family if she wanted to.

“It’s been almost a week and my fiancée is ignoring her parents and sister’s calls and texts, and she hasn’t said anything about re-inviting them even after I let her know it’s up to her and I support her decision,” he said. The family also left rude voicemails for the OP calling him controlling and saying his fiancée was overreacting.
The OP explained that his fiance has been working at a hospital since June 2019 and has been struggling a lot with the challenges of the pandemic. “Some days she cries a lot,” he said. Even though they can’t afford the biggest or most expensive wedding, the OP was going to do everything in his power to make their wedding day as perfect as possible.
He asked Redditors if he was wrong for uninviting his fiancée’s only family, especially since he did it without asking his fiancée first. Reddit users were on his side and pointed out how much favoritism the family seemed to be showing the fiancée’s sister.
One user commented, “Her parents are playing favoritism and the whole family sounds narcissistic and manipulative. Your fiancée deserves a wedding dedicated to her, not them. They seem like they type to wear white to the wedding and act confused when you’re upset.”
Another user said, “Her family MASSIVELY overstepped. I suspect sister is the Golden Child and your fianéee has had to suck up so much behavior like this over the years.” The user also gave the OP some advice and said, “Make sure you have password protected all vendors as vindictive relatives sometimes change or cancel things. Not saying this will happen, but better to be safe!”
