Guide Dog Saves His Blind Owner's Life After Falling Onto Subway Tracks

Jun 14, 2019 by apost team

Many visually impaired people rely on guide dogs for assistance getting around safely. Guide dogs have been well-trained to prevent owners from taking a false and dangerous step. However, there are other dangers that people face while out and about, and one brave guide dog went above and beyond to save his owner from a unique situation.

The Guardian reported on what happened: Cecil Williams was preparing to board a passenger train with his guide dog, Orlando, on a trip for a doctor’s appointment. Unfortunately, 60-year-old Cecil began to feel suddenly ill and began to collapse perilously close to the train tracks. Orlando did his best to prevent his owner from falling onto the tracks. However, he was unsuccessful.

As soon as Cecil hit the ground, Orlando rushed to help. He barked frantically in an effort to revive his owner, but Cecil did not respond. Orlando and observers nearby noticed that the next train was headed their way and that they were running out of time. Some observers tried to help Orlando as well. Orlando began licking Cecil’s face, and Cecil finally woke up. However, the train was too close for the pair to move out of harm’s way.

The train conductor slowed down and passed over them without causing serious injury, and they were able to escape immediately afterward. Emergency help arrived and the two were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Thankfully, both Cecil and Orlando suffered only minor injuries.

Many of those who heard about this incredible story made a financial donation on an IndieGoGo page so that Orlando could stay with Cecil after the 11-year-old dog retired.
