Guest Shocked After Receiving Charge For Additional Slice Of Wedding Cake The Newlyweds Saw Them Take Via CCTV

Weddings are usually one of the most special days in someone's life. For guests at weddings, it's a wonderful thing to witness two people share their love with their nearest and dearest, which makes them not only special for the bride and groom but for everyone included.

But weddings are also notorious for creating a lot of pressure and stress for the married couple to be, which is why there is a reputation for over-the-top antics and unbelievable occurrences at weddings.

Unfortunately for one wedding guest named John Puffin from Kent, England, he learned this the hard way. While attending a friend's wedding, the guests were told at the event that they would have to pay for each piece of cake they consumed. Wedding cakes are standard at most weddings, so the fact that the guests were being asked to pay was already a little odd.

But after the wedding was over, Puffin received a text from the couple saying that they noticed he had eaten two pieces of cake on the night — which they found out by reviewing CCTV footage! — and asked him to pay for the second piece. The amount? A measly £3.66 (around $4.98).

The entire incident was so absurd to Puffin that he took his story to Reddit's "Wedding Shaming" subreddit. As expected, most people were on his side, calling out the bride and groom for having a wedding in the first place if they couldn't afford the cake themselves.

Puffin spoke to media outlets after the incident and elaborated on the story. Here's what happened.

Puffin's initial post on Reddit was a simple screenshot of a text conversation with the couple. The headline reads:

"I paid for the first slice after it was announced on the day we'd be helping to pay for their cake!! Apparently didn't count for the second."

The accompanying image of the text conversation reveals a video that the couple sent, with Puffin stating he didn't know what was meant by that. To which the couple responded:

"Hey so we were just looking at the CCTV and saw that you had two pieces of the wedding cake. We announced that each guest must pay per slice and noticed that you only paid for the one. Can you please send the £3.66 asap."

Shocked by the fact that not only did the guests have to pay for the cake, which he already did for one slice, but that the couple went over security footage days after their honeymoon to check how many slices each person had, Puffin took his story to Reddit. Other users were just as outraged, writing:

"I’m not sure which I’m more horrified at 1) making guests pay for wedding cake at all 2) monitoring the footage for guest consumption."

Meanwhile, others offered a realistic solution if you can't afford cake at your wedding:

"If you can't afford to buy a cake to offer your guests, then don't get a cake. Charging your guests is ridiculous and tacky."

Overall, the consensus was that it was ridiculous, with one writing sarcastically, "tell them to take you to small claims court."

Since the Reddit post went viral, Puffin elaborated on the story to media outlets. He told Newsweek that he was contacted days after the couple got home from their honeymoon, with reviewing of the security footage and costs "apparently on their to-do list." After initially refusing to pay, the bride "responded quite abruptly," telling him they needed the money and that "being frugal is an unattractive and ugly, ugly trait in a man."

In another interview, he said that when it was announced that guests would have to pay for a slice of cake, many weren't impressed. Apparently, one guest said the cake wasn't worth what they were charging, and another "asked for an invoice from the cake makers to see if they were actually making a profit from it," but it turned out they supposedly couldn't find the receipt.

After being asked about the unusual approach to a wedding, Puffin explained the couple is "really tight, but weirdly charismatic.” He went on to recall another incident they'd had with them before:

“I’ve often found myself questioning why I am bending over backwards for them. A few years back me and my partner looked after their dogs and they said we could stay at theirs while we did and use their car, etc. When they returned I got a Revolut request from the groom for 13 GBP [around $17.69] and change for the petrol we used to take their dogs out while they were on holiday.”

He said he didn't make a fuss as the amount wasn't a lot and it wasn't worth ruining the friendship over. But after taking the wedding cake fiasco public, he said "it's nice to know this happened on a larger scale and I'm not the only one that thinks it's nuts."
