Have you ever thought taking a selfie might save your life? Well, it’s actually happened. In 2017, police arrested Cedar Park, Texas resident Christopher Precopia at work for a gruesome crime. This was something he was totally not expecting. I mean, imagine showing up to your regular job and having a team of police officers appear to arrest you.

But luckily, a selfie Precopia had taken cleared his name. Read on to find out the unbelievable details of this true story and to hear about new charges that have been brought against the now 23-year-old Precopia.

His accuser was an ex-girlfriend from a long time ago, according to KVUE News. In fact, they had not been in contact for some time and had not really been around each other since they dated in high school. Unfortunately, as in most situations like these, it was her word against his. The hearsay and oral statements did not paint Precopia in a positive light. Even though he was innocent, his accuser stated that he entered her home by force and physically assaulted her. She even claimed that Precopia had used a box cutter to slice an "X" above her chest.

He had reportedly said that the whole event was a nightmare. It completely blindsided him. His parents paid his exorbitant bail of $150,000, KVUE News reports. Luckily, his own mother was able to prove his innocence. At the alleged time of the attack, Precopia had taken a selfie with his family at the Renaissance Austin Hotel in Texas. The selfie was dated at 7:02 p.m., and his accuser stated he assaulted her at 7:20 p.m., more than 70 miles away. It was understood by the court it was not realistically possible for him to travel that distance in a matter of 18 minutes. He was soon cleared of all charges.

His ex-girlfriend then admitted to lying about what happened, was required to pay Precopia $2,000, and was sentenced to 12 months of probation in 2019, according to the Killeen Daily Harold. The charges and ordeal still follow Precopia to this day. For example, he was rejected by the U.S. Army because of this felony charge, as The San Jose Mercury News reported back in 2018.

In October of 2020, The South Whidbey Record provided an update on Precopia. According to the local Washington paper, the now 23-year-old man was charged in Island County, Washington for allegedly distributing child pornography. The paper further reports that the Navy also discharged Christoper in connection with a seperate case in which he allegedly sent unsolicited nude photos to someone without their consent. Per the paper's October 2, 2020 update, Precopia is living at the Navy's barracks after posting $15,000 bail.
