Patriotism is not dead in America. While the country is mired in a bit of a cultural war, there is still a large group of Americans who clearly grasp what America is all about.

That notion was reinforced back in November of 2018 as a proud group of 10 US Marines gathered on a dance floor to sing country singer Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA," a touching tribute to the United States of America.

This dramatic scene was captured on video for prosperity as the Marines celebrated the Corps' 243rd birthday.

As the Corps' 244th birthday approaches next month, this is a great opportunity to remember what's important about being an American. When Greenwood penned this song back in 1983, there's little doubt he had no idea the song would be adopted as a "secondary" national anthem by proud Americans living from shore to shore.

Greenwood first released the song in 1984 to limited exposure and success. It wasn't until America got involved in the Gulf war during the mid 1990s that the song came alive to capture the imagination of Americans who were proud to see the country stand for the rights and protection of others.

The song hit the charts. This was repeated again in September 2011 as the Twin Towers came crashing down to earth. There's clearly something about this song that comforts Americans during trying times.

In an interview several years back, Greenwood explained the genesis of and the inspiration behind "God Bless the USA." In the interview, he stated,

"I wanted to write it my whole life. When I got to that point, we were doing 300 days a year on the road, and we were on our fourth or fifth album on MCA. I called my producer, and I said, ‘I have a need to do this.’ I’ve always wanted to write a song about America, and I said, ‘We just need to be more united.'”

More than 36 years later, this song lays in waiting for yet another opportunity to be called into action like a soldier going into battle.

During times of national tragedy, this touching and beautiful song serves as a reminder that we are all Americans. If we believe in the power of a country that took almost 250 years to build, we can all stand united as one body, invincible and strong.

You need to take a moment and revisit this beautiful moment, remind family and friends about why they should be proud to be American. Those 10 Marines understood that almost one year ago.
