Group Of Four Kids Dazzle Class Performing Vintage Song Most Of Their Classmates Have Never Listened To

The young women of the Baltimore, Maryland, a cappella group GQ (Girls Quartet) — composed of singers Amanda Sandroni, Ali Hauger, Katie Gillis and Katie Macdonald — freshened up an old but well-known song to surprise their audience back in 2013. Although you would probably guess that girls their age are into contemporary pop music, these millennials have more fun with tunes from their grandparents' generation.

When they covered Herman’s Hermits’ 1965 track “I'm Into Something Good,” it was a surprise to hear, but they absolutely nailed the performance!

Their informal performance covers the 1965 classic by the classic English rock band “I'm Into Something Good.” In the '60s this song was a chart-topper in the U.S. and the U.K. The singers’ grandparents probably loved it, and they may have passed the obsession on to their kids. Hearing four young adults sing the track is a pleasant surprise and breath of fresh air.

But this isn't the version of “I'm Into Something Good” that you might remember. Not only do they look outside of their generational wheelhouse for the song, but these girls also throw their own spin on the hit track — barbershop quartet style. GQ's version features a fantastic four-part harmony and foot-tapping swing.

Their enjoyment is infectious as they sway to the rhythm. As you watch, you'll hardly be able to keep from dancing right along with them! The best part comes at the end when they display their incredible vocal talents through prolonged high notes and a dramatic resolution to the harmony. From the enthusiastic applause they receive, you can tell that their audience is stunned by the treat.

According to their website, the four friends started GQ in July 2011, just two years before their “I'm Into Something Good” cover.

“(Girls Quartet) knew right away they had something unique,” GQ’s website reads. “Each voice brought an important quality to the group’s sound. They knew they wanted to try and stay away from traditional a cappella arrangements and explore songs and sounds that weren’t common.”

The four women formed their barbershop quartet at Towson University, a large public university in Maryland. Since these talented singers got together, they have taken the world by storm, competing in a cappella shows across the United States and in foreign countries, such as Germany, Spain, England and the Netherlands. 

GQ also has three albums, which feature covers of popular songs like “You Are My Sunshine,” “Bei Mir Bist Du Schön” and “Scotch and Soda.”

Beyond their more conventional successes, however, the group has also made it big online. The below video has accumulated more than 6 million views since it was uploaded in 2013 — not to mention hundreds of positive comments.

“I'm a music education major and direct an a cappella group. This is an incredible performance by my standards, and I don't use incredible lightly,” Mark Kolb wrote on YouTube. “Dynamic contrast is fantastic, and your crescendos and diminuendos are extremely well synced. Not to mention your matching vowels, timbre, expression, and balance.”

Suffice it to say that these four women know how to sing!
