Groomer Gives Shelter Dogs Haircuts To Ensure They Find A Forever Home

A good haircut can make anyone feel like new, and that goes for dogs too.

In fact, for a shelter dog, a good haircut can mean the difference between finding a forever home, or being euthanized. A haircut not only makes them feel better and improves their mood, but it also improves their chance of being adopted.

Mark Imhof is a volunteer dog groomer for Animal Care Centers of NYC. He graduated from NYU with an MBA but a few years ago, he changed his career and decided he was going to work with animals from now on.

After receiving his dog grooming certification, he began using his new skill to transform shelter pets and make them more adoptable.

Many of the dogs Mark works with at the shelter have been abused and neglected. They have terribly matted and dirty fur, which not only looks unkempt but can actually be very painful for a dog.

Mark posted this explanation on his Facebook page

"A matted fur needs to be worked on to clear in order to do a cut as a clipper cannot run through matted fur. What is matted fur? Imagine tying all your hair in knots as tight to your scalp as possible so no comb could be pulled through the hair without ripping hair out. THAT is matted fur. It is very painful for a dog and quite difficult for a groomer to work though, but that is the groomer’s job to help the dog."

According to Mark, the grooming can lead to a total change in the dog's behaviour:

“A badly matted dog may be cranky, may bite a lot, and often is considered unsocial. Now, please put yourself in the position of the dog with matted hair [...] and imagine yourself in pain everytime you move. Would you be a pleasant person to speak with? I don’t think I would. ”
