Greta Thunberg Named Time Magazine's Person Of The Year For 2019

16-year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg from Sweden has just been named Time magazine's person of the year. 

Thunberg is best known for starting a strike from school in Stockholm last summer to protest the Swedish government’s lack of action when it comes to combating climate change. The strike takes place each Friday since and has spread across the globe, with an estimated 1.6 million students taking part in March.

Thunberg recently sailed to the Americas by a racing boat that releases zero carbon to help further her climate initiatives. Before taking the trip the 16-year-old said in a statement: “We still have a window of time when things are in our own hands. But that window is closing fast. That is why I have decided to make this trip now,”

Time magazine wrote an expose on Greta as part of her being named their person of the year saying, "Thunberg is 16 but looks 12. She usually wears her light brown hair pulled into two braids, parted in the middle. She has Asperger’s syndrome, which means she doesn’t operate on the same emotional register as many of the people she meets. She dislikes crowds; ignores small talk; and speaks in direct, uncomplicated sentences." 

Earlier this year, Thunberg told the annual convention of CEOs and world leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, “I want you to panic." She added, “I want you to feel the fear I feel every day. And then I want you to act.”

Time reports that Thunberg is apart of no political party or advocacy group, she is simply a teenager who wants to make a change. "She is not a scientist or a politician. She has no access to traditional levers of influence: she’s not a billionaire or a princess, a pop star or even an adult..."

"...She is an ordinary teenage girl who, in summoning the courage to speak truth to power, became the icon of a generation. By clarifying an abstract danger with piercing outrage, Thunberg became the most compelling voice on the most important issue facing the planet."

Thunberg revealed she avoids air travel due to the high levels of carbon emissions it entails. Instead, she travels by train within Europe when necessary for speaking engagements.
