Thunberg is a vocal activist for the climate, encouraging students everywhere to protest. She is the founder of Fridays for Future, which started with Greta protesting every day at the Swedish parliament and spread into a global phenomenon.

Thunberg was nominated for the 2019 prize as well, although she lost to the Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed according to Business Insider.

Qualified nominators such as lawmakers, other Nobel Prize winners, or members of the International Court of The Hague may nominate anybody they choose. The Nobel committee then selects the laureate according to its official website. Last year, Thunberg was nominated by three members of the Norwegian parliament.
