Grandmother Refuses To Stop Meeting Grandchild After Her Son, 40, Abandons Mom, 20, After She Got Pregnant

Every parent hopes that one day their children will grow up to help make the world a better place no matter what. Whether it’s starting their own charitable organization or simply just being kind and respectful to others, all parents hope that their grown kids will do what they can to help others. This mindset can then hopefully be passed down to the next generation.

While being a parent is exciting, being a grandparent is just as exhilarating. However, one woman felt like she was doing something wrong by being in her granddaughter’s life. The problem was that her son was 40 years old and had gotten a 20-year-old college student pregnant. He didn’t want the baby and decided to stay out of the baby’s and the baby’s mother’s lives, although he still paid child support.

This didn’t sit well with his mother. She wanted to be part of her grandchild’s life and help the baby’s mother raise the baby as much as possible, even though it went against her son’s personal wishes. The woman’s son has since become angry with her, and even her own daughter agrees that she should stop spending time with the other family, but the woman is heartbroken that her granddaughter and granddaughter’s mother would be left abandoned.

The woman went to Reddit on Sept. 22, 2021, to explain her situation and seek out advice on how she should navigate such a difficult situation. She wanted to be there for her granddaughter, but felt wrong for disrespecting her son’s wishes.

Starting off her Reddit post, the original poster (OP) admitted that her 40-year-old son is a “ladies man.” She didn’t have a problem with it until he got a 20-year-old college student pregnant last year after claiming that condoms don’t work for him. “When he found out about the baby he blocked the mom and ghosted her for a month,” OP explained. 

Her son made it clear that he wanted nothing to do with the woman or their baby, and the woman was perfectly fine with that so long as he agreed to pay child support. “I was shocked and told him that he could either step up or not, but that I would have a relationship with the child because it is my only grandchild,” OP said. Her son decided to stay out of the child’s life, but was placed on child support in August 2021.

OP continued, “Now that my granddaughter Lily is born, I have been helping pay for everything because her mom is in college and my son quit his job so his payment would go down. I am very disappointed in him.” While Lily’s mom was in class, OP agreed to watch Lily. She even helped pay for a babysitter during times she couldn’t watch the baby herself so Lily’s mom could focus more on getting her degree. 

“Money is no problem for my family, but my son is very angry that I am helping them out,” OP said. Her son reasoned that if the 20-year-old was struggling so much to pay for a child, then she shouldn’t have gone through with the pregnancy. OP fought back and told him that he was the one who refused to use protection.

It wasn’t fair to make the mother and her baby suffer, especially since the baby was innocent in all of this, but OP’s son was relentless. “He said that it is either him or them and I said that I would always help my granddaughter,” OP said. “He has stopped talking to me and my daughter said that I went too far and that I should just cut ties with them.” 

OP wanted to help her grandchild and the baby’s mother, but she felt wrong for disrespecting her son’s wishes. However, Reddit users agreed with her decision to help Lily and Lily’s mother, and made sure to express their distaste for her own son. 

One user said, “He is entitled and selfish and frankly creepy that at 40 he knocked up a 20-year-old. He needs to grow up.” Other users agreed, with a second commenter saying, “The fact that he quit his job so the girl half his age he knocked gets less from him to feed and clothe their daughter says about all there needs to be said about him.”

A third user replied, “It’s really none of his business what OP does. He is middle-aged, and would rather wreck the life of a newly adult woman half his age, as well as his child’s, because he doesn’t want responsibility.” The user continued, “OP’s help, both financial and practical, will make all the difference in the lives of the grandchild and her mother. It only takes one person to change everything for someone, and OP has chosen to be that change.”
