If you think older people are unable to learn new things, consider Janet Fein's true story. Obtaining a college degree at any age is a challenge. First, you need to spend long hours attending classes, taking notes and preparing homework assignments. You have to work hard to get good grades on all your tests. Some people never have the time to attend college until they reach their senior years. Janet Fein is a prime example of an elderly woman who decided to get her bachelor's degree. Evidently, a person is never too old to learn.

At 84 years old, Janet had already lived a rewarding life. She married her sweetheart when she was 19 years old and eventually gave birth to five children. Janet currently has eight grandchildren to keep her busy. During her youth, Janet took the time to go to college and graduated from Richland College with an associate degree. She then landed a job at Scottish Rite Hospital for Children and worked there for the next two decades.

When Janet retired at the age of 77, she was determined to do more with her life. Enrolling at the University of Texas at Dallas was a challenge. She decided to earn a bachelor's degree in sociology. Janet told an anchor person that she did not see anything barring her way.

Even though she wanted to obtain her degree, she did experience difficulties along the way. Janet was unable to walk without the help of a walker. Plus, she needed to carry an oxygen tank with her at all times. Consequently, it was necessary to take a front-row seat in every class.

As time went on, Janet made the decision to take online classes instead of attending college in person. It was much easier to study in her room at the assisted living home where she resided. However, Janet did not know how to use a computer. So, she typed her assignments on an old-fashioned typewriter.

Although you may think that the elderly lady might not have reached her goal, nothing is further from the truth. Janet completed her classes and obtained a bachelor's degree. She attended the graduation ceremony in person on December 19, 2018.
