Alma Johnson is a living embodiment of the 'it takes a village' philosophy. She has been in the trenches for the children in her native Crowley, Lousiana for many years. Johnson has grandchildren of her own but is known as 'nanny' to all the kids in her neighborhood CBS News reports.

Johnson has created a network of support for the children living nearby and meets many of their needs. She charges nothing for the work she does.

The cost of childcare is a problem for many area mothers. This is especially true for young women still in search of employment. But Johnson refused to let daycare costs prohibit the women in her neighborhood from finding and keeping a job.

The doors to Alma Johnson's modest apartment are open full time to every child in the neighborhood. If the child shows up with no food, no problem. If the mother does not leave diapers for a child, Johnson tries to provide them.

Neighborhood parents who have something to bring with their children do so. The others are extremely thankful to Johnson for her help.

Johnson works at the endeavor seven days a week and says she doesn't think of taking a day off. The service she provides is invaluable to the people in her community and she says she does not charge because her faith in God will not allow her to do so.

Johnson says she loves all the children and she does what she does because she promised God to serve the children as long as he provided her with the strength to do so.

Johnson also spent her own childhood in the area and says she understands the many hardships. She says work came before school when she was a child. It is the wish of Johnson to see all the children in the neighborhood attain the education she never had the chance to pursue.

Most children have no way to get to school if they miss the bus in the morning. For this reason, Johnson will knock on the door of any child she notices was not on the bus stop. She will make them get dressed for school and take them herself if necessary.

One member of Johnson's community says the work she is doing is the best thing happening in their corner of the world.
