Grandma Leaves House To Grandson Alone And He Doesn't Think He Should Share It
Nov 04, 2021 by apost team
Many people believe that because we are related to our family members, we should be there for them during both the good and the bad times, especially when someone is in need of assistance. One man stood by that conviction when his grandmother was going through some financial struggles. Since then, his good deed seems to have paid off, as his grandmother left him her house in her will.
About eight years ago, the man’s grandmother was on the brink of losing her home. She was in severe debt and needed help paying for everything in order to keep her house. She asked several relatives, but none were willing to help. Fortunately, her now 27-year-old grandson stepped up and gave her $1,500. She never paid him back, and they left it at that.
Fast forward to the year 2021, and the man’s grandmother sadly passed away. She left her four-bedroom, two-bathroom home to her grandson, officially making him the owner of the house. However, his cousin was extremely upset about this and demanded that he share the home or give it to her. She had two kids and felt she deserved a big home to live in just like the one the man had inherited.
Since the house had been left solely to him, the 27-year-old didn’t feel like he owed it to his family to share the home. However, a lot of family members are on his cousin’s side, so he decided to go to Reddit on Nov. 2, 2021, to ask users for advice on what he should do.

At the start of his Reddit post, the original poster (OP) explained that after his grandmother recently passed away, she left him her four-bedroom, two-bathroom house in her will. “Now before my grandmother passed she was in danger of losing the house because of unpaid taxes,” the OP said. “She asked various family members for help but none did.”
This all happened about eight years ago when the OP had been in college. He fortunately received a huge student refund, so he was able to give his grandmother $1,500 to settle her debt. “She said thank you and we never talked about it again,” the OP explained. Now, the OP is the owner of a house in the heart of Atlanta, Georgia, and he’s already made plans to move in at the end of November after doing some cleaning and basic renovations.
The OP considers the place to be “prime real estate,” and it seems like much of his family does, too — especially his cousin and her kids. It turns out that his cousin doesn’t feel like the OP deserved to be given the home, and she has become extremely upset about the entire situation. The OP explained, “She said because I don’t have any kids I should give her the house because (in) her eyes I got the house for free.”
At first the OP just thought she was being unreasonable, but a lot of their other family members have taken his cousin’s side. They reasoned that since he is an able-bodied young man, he will have no problem trying to buy a house in the future.

Fighting With His Family

His family also pointed out that it’s pretty hard for his cousin to get a home because she is a single mom. However, the OP didn’t see how that was his problem since his cousin made the decision to have children.
The OP continued, “Everyone is calling me selfish ... maybe I am, but my grandmother wanted me to have the house.” Still, he couldn’t help but wonder if he was actually in the wrong in this situation, so he asked Reddit users for their opinions.
Unlike the majority of his family, Reddit users were on the OP’s side. Many of them explained that it was his house and he had the right to do whatever he wanted with it. They also encouraged him to be mindful of how his family was acting during this time. One user even questioned the cousin’s motives and asked, “Where was she when granny was about to be homeless??”
Another user commented, “It seems like everyone wants something for nothing. OP was willing to help when their grandmother needed it the most and now that OP has the house the cousin wants it because somehow she thinks she’s more entitled to it? I don’t think it works like that.”
A third user added, “Single mother here and the idea that she needs to be given a house to provide a home for her kids is just nuts. There are a lot of other ways a family can rally around a single mom, and ultimately you don’t get to demand what others give you. It’s theirs to give or not whether that’s time, money, shelter, friendship or emotional support.”
