Birthdays are usually a happy time for little kids. There are presents on the way, delicious cake, and fun with family and friends. But sometimes danger lurks around the corner, even at birthday parties! Lexie’s family was in the middle of preparing everything for her ninth birthday party. As they were bustling about, something tragic was occurring that only Lexie was aware of.

However, Lexie wasn’t able to tell anyone about it.

Lexie is wheelchair-bound due to cerebral palsy. She is unable to walk or talk. While preparations for her birthday went on around her, danger was nearby. Lexie has a very adventurous and rambunctious little brother, 18-month-old Leeland.

He was in danger and she was the only one who realized it!

Kelly Jackson, the mother, went upstairs to change for the party. Grandmother Nancy Comeau-Drisdelle brought little Leeland downstairs and continued to work around the house while the young child toddled around.

Lexie was the only one to see Leeland get out through the unlocked patio door. He then closed the door behind him and made a beeline for the family’s swimming pool!

Lexie knew he was in trouble. But what could she do? She did what she could, that’s what! Lexie mustered every ounce of her strength and started to shriek while pointing at the door. Kelly immediately knew something had to be wrong. She told CTV Atlantic that they never heard her scream that way before.

Nancy spun around at the screams and realized that Lexie was pointing at the door. She ran outside and found Leeland at the edge of the pool. He had ingested water but was fine. It was a true miracle that the little boy didn’t drown! Leeland owes his life to his older sister who, despite all of her physical challenges, saved his life. They say that they will never forget this birthday! The next day, the family fenced in the pool and put up a locking gate. Lexie also received awards from her local MLA and from the Halifax Regional Police, praising her life-saving efforts.
