Gordon Ramsay Opens Up About His Wholesome Dad Life & How His 5 Kids 'Brought The Most Emotion' Out Of Him

Gordon Ramsay’s quick-witted nature and brazen style of criticism earned him a no-nonsense personality in the culinary world and in showbiz as a whole. It's safe to say that this worked perfectly for him, having amassed fame and success over the years. However, away from the notorious bluntness and brutal honesty he displays on television shows, Gordon is a loving father to five children.

While talking to People at his London home for his September 2023 exclusive cover story, the "Kitchen Nightmares" host dived into his many facets as a dad. He laid bare how he stays grounded around his children and tapped into his emotional side.

The A-lister is a celebrity chef, writer, and TV personality. The British star has become a global figure and has four top-rated shows, seven Michelin stars, and 77 restaurants around the world. Gordon also has a frozen-food line and has written several books.

The famous chef is married to cookbook author Tana Ramsay. The couple tied the knot in 1996, and they share five children: Megan, twins Holly and Jack, Matilda (Tilly), and their youngest, Oscar.

Gordon thrives as a father and in his passion for cooking. Per Celebrity Networth, the world-class chef makes about $60 million a year and has an estimated worth of about $220 million. It is safe to say that Gordon's success is highly commendable, especially when looking back at the restaurateur's humble beginnings. Gordon came from a family that struggled because his dad strived to keep jobs.

Fortunately, when the now-star chef was 16, he moved out, and by 19, he found his passion for cooking. Although his children enjoy a good life, Gordon clarified that he doesn't plan to distribute his wealth among them but rather channel the bulk of it to charity.

The celebrity chef made it known that he has no intention of sharing his multi-million wealth with his children. However, the “Humble Pie” author intended to assist them with a 25% deposit for an apartment when they wanted to get one. In 2017, while speaking with Travel and Leisure, Gordon shared that he draws the line on luxury when it comes to where his children sit in an airplane. Although he and his wife sit in first class, the chef revealed that his children would be in economy class seats. He shared:

"They haven't worked anywhere near hard enough to afford that. At that age, at that size, you're telling me they need to sit in first class? No, they do not. We're really strict on that."

Also, in 2019, Gordon gave a breakdown of the amount he and Tana gave their kids per week. He shared that Megan was given $100 for her university needs in a week, while the other older children were given $50 for a week. The chef has very much made it clear that he wanted his children to find their own career path, succeed, and make a name for themselves. While Megan is interested in psychology, Jack pursued a military career, Holly works in the fashion industry, and Matilda has an interest in the culinary world.

Although Gordon wants his children to make a name for themselves, he has also proved that he would always cheer them on. In October 2020, Jack completed the basic rigorous training for the Royal Marines Commando. The proud father did not hesitate to share pictures on social media with his son to express his pride in Jack's achievement.

The multi-Michelin-starred chef opened up about his life as a dad and how he separated his TV personality from what applied at home. He revealed how his children brought out his soft side. During an interview, Gordon shared:

"The kids have brought the most emotion out of me. It’s funny, isn’t it? Because everyone thinks, ‘God, you must be an absolute ass to be at home with.’ (But) Tana’s super fierce, an ex-Montessori school teacher. So I’m the softie.”

The chef continued that everyone had a good and bad side; however, "I'm just very good at highlighting the bad that turned into something incredible." Gordon's wife, Tana, also described him as "incredibly sensitive" and "a crier." During the interview, the father-of-five also talked about his children's achievements.

He shared that Jack was defending the country as a Royal Marines Commando, Megan was a police officer, Holly was into fashion, and Tilly was studying. Gordon navigated the angle of discussion by reflecting on his role as a father. He revealed:

"My job as a dad is to come up with a solution to their problems. That’s the most important role of a dad.”

He continued that he liked it when his children tested him and were unafraid to tell him when he was wrong. However, Gordon did not learn his amazing parenting skills from his father, who used to abuse his mother.

He shared, "Growing up, I never had a father figure. Everything I was witnessing at the time was from an alcoholic father, so I knew I had to take the opposites." The star’s childhood may have been unpleasant in some ways, but it was the catalyst in helping him channel a better fatherhood.
