Google’s Super Bowl Commercial Lets Viewers Remember Loved Ones

Feb 03, 2020 by apost team

The Super Bowl is definitely the biggest sporting event of the year in the U.S. Not only because of the sport but also because of the star performances and, of course, the often quite extravagant and special ads running during the show.

This wasn't always the case, of course. Back in January 1967, when the Super Bowl first happened, star performances and expensive ads were the last thing on anyone's mind. The term Super Bowl wasn't even coined yet; back then the event was called the "AFL-NFL World Championship Game" and marked a merger between the NFL and its then-rival the American Football League (AFL).

During the years, the Super Bowl changed a lot. It's no longer held in January but instead on the first Sunday of February, it gained the name we all know and love it by today and instead of a college marching band we get to see high quality star performances. It also became one of the most-watched television events of the U.S., with the 2015 Super Bowl still holding the title of most-watched U.S. TV moment of all time, according to CNN. With all of these changes, it's no wonder that the event's ads also changed.

According to the Business Insider, ads during the first Super Bowl cost between 37,500 and 42,500 dollars. This year, companies had to pay 5.6 millions for a 30 second spot. It's no wonder Super Bowl ads are as extravagant as they are. Usually that is. Google decided on a different course this year. Instead of a bunch of stars in whacky situations, viewers were treated to a slideshow of photos and screenshots showing a happy couple over the years, accompanied by a man's voice.

The pictures show happy moments of the couple's life, taken in a variety of situations. The man uses Google technology to sort his photos, add things to his collections and generally remembers the wife he apparently lost. What makes the ad even more special is the fact that the man talking is indeed the grandfather of a Google employee, talking about his wife who recently died. It is a powerful, personal moment that we all can relate to.
