In today's world with all of the sad and disheartening news stories we hear on a regular basis, we often forget that good Samaritans exist. These kind-hearted citizens are often the everyday people we pass by every day.

These good samaritans truly shine in someone else's hour of need. They go out of their way to help a complete stranger to show them compassion--something the world could sure use more of.

One story that is making its round on the Internet focuses on the acts of one man--a modern day hero. He saw someone in need and he took action. While most of us lead busy lives Shawn Allen, the story's hero, didn't think twice when he saw that there was something he could do to help a deputy in need.

This story comes out of Birmingham, Alabama. One rainy day during a funeral procession celebrating the life of a fallen officer, Allen stepped up and did something no one else was willing to do.

While most of us tend to fend for ourselves on rainy days, Allen was looking out for someone else. As the rain poured down and the other police officers stood in salute during the procession, one deputy didn't realize she had a guardian angel.

Tiffany Dial, the deputy in question, stood still for 30 minutes. It was at the beginning of this procession that Shawn Allen, the mystery man, stood behind her with his umbrella.

The two waited in the rain for a half hour, yet Tiffany was unaware of Allen the entire time! Dial was simply paying her respects as she stood at attention. With her wide-brimmed hat on, she couldn't see that someone was standing behind her, shielding her from the rain.

Dial knew that people were taking pictures, but it wasn't until later that she discovered the truth of what happened that day.

After the photo went viral, Dial was moved beyond words. "It meant a lot," Dial shares, "in ways you can't even put into words."

Once she identified the civilian as Shawn Allen, Dial knew she had to speak to him. Ironically, both Allen and Dial work at the same building. Though the two were strangers prior to that day, now they share a special bond through Allen's act of kindness.

When the two met face-to-face, Allen shared that he was incredibly moved by the procession. He was impressed that someone would stand at attention to pay their respects the way Dial did for Sgt. Carter.

This is what compelled Allen to hold out his umbrella and wait through the rain. This sparked up emotions in Dial as she had a newfound realization about her role as a law enforcement officer: people care about her and the job that she does.

Dial goes on to share that she's experienced how other people often treat police officers and how that leads to feelings of being jaded and disappointed in others. Getting to experience such a kind gesture of positivity really changed her life.

Allen later revealed that he never spoke to Dial out of respect for Sgt. Carter. What a moving story for both Dial and Allen!

It's heartwarming to know that there are still good people out in the world. See the picture for yourself and let us know what you think about this story by leaving a comment below!
