Good Samaritan Finds Driver Stuck In School Bus Crash & Calms His Nerves While Help Arrives

With all the bad things happening in the world, it’s hard not to question why these things even occur. But there are also great things around us that serve as a reminder that there is still good in humanity.

In October 2022, a school bus crashed outside a Taco Bell branch in Forest Hills, Pennsylvania, at around 10 in the morning. It particularly hit the steel bar supporting the famous entrance sign welcoming residents and visitors alike in Forrest Hills.

Prior to the accident, the driver had just finished dropping students at a public school in Pittsburgh.

It was only the driver on the bus at the time of the accident. But the crash “disintegrated” the bus, leaving the driver seriously injured.

Thankfully, a man was there to the rescue, which has since made people start calling him a Good Samaritan for his heroic deed that saved the life of the driver.

As if he was really meant to be there at that exact moment, Ferree was merely passing by when the bus slammed its way into the steel pillar.

When Ferree heard an “earth-shattering” kaboom, it dawned upon him that the situation was worse than he thought.

“I had seen to my left a big yellow blur hitting the Forest Hills sign,” Ferree recalled in an interview with WTAE. “Pieces and parts going everywhere. It was just an earth-shattering kaboom.”

“I saw the windshield,” Ferree told WPXI. “The front hood assembly, the front axle, just rolling down the street, this big plume of smoke. It was a school bus.”

When Kenny Ferree passed through the bus, he could’ve just checked it out for a moment and then left soon after. But no, he did whatever he could to help out the driver.

Ferree recalled the moment he was the driver, whom he described as “shaken up” from the accident.

“The man was just sitting like this in the vehicle. He looked like he was still conscious, just kind of shaken up,” Ferree told KDKA in an interview.

Ferree tried to become resourceful by taking his shirt off and wrapping it around the driver’s head to stop the man’s head from bleeding.

“I crawled up into the wreckage, the closest I could get to him. His head was bleeding. I had nothing with me; I’m covered in blood. I took my shirt off and I wrapped my shirt around his head and put his head back and I held him,” he said.

He also made sure that there were no other people who got hurt in the accident by asking the driver himself.

“I asked him, ‘Are you empty?,’” Ferree said. “And he said, ‘I’m empty.’ He kept saying, ‘I’m empty.’ There were no kids. You could see. It was split like a banana.”

Despite the worrisome situation, Ferree made sure not to tell the driver about how bad the accident was because he didn’t want to cause any panic.

“He was doing OK,” Ferree said. “We were talking. I knew how bad it was, but I wasn’t going to let him know.”

It took more than 30 minutes before the responders successfully extricated the driver from the bus.

Based on the report from KDKA, the Allegheny County police rushed the driver to a hospital and had been in stable condition soon after.

Ferree came at the right time – and made a whole lot of difference in the life of the driver.
