Jean-Paul LaPierre is a local hero in Chicago due to his bravery and willingness to act without hesitation against a dangerous criminal. In this recent event, LaPierre was on a Chicago CTA train with a large number of passengers who were headed to watch the Chicago Marathon, and he overheard some talk about a man robbing people on the train at gunpoint.

It turned out that there was indeed a 30-year-old man who was walking through the isles pointing a gun at passengers and demanding money from them. When LaPierre heard about this, he decided to act even though he was unarmed and would be going up against a man with a gun.

“He was very quietly robbing people,” LaPierre told the Chicago Sun Times. “I went up front and said to him, give me the gun and we started fighting for the gun.”

He later said the publication, “I don’t like people that strike fear in people like that,” he said. “I don’t like bullies.”

After people rushed out the doors at the Cumberland train stop, LaPierre went back into the train to confront the robber. A passenger recorded the events that took place when Jean-Pierre was subduing the gunman with his bare hands.

He had gotten the gun away from the robber, and he was keeping the man at bay with sheer determination and assertiveness. He was telling the man to remain still. The man was asking Jean-Paul to let him go, but LaPierre replied that he wouldn't release him until the police arrived.

A woman urged LaPierre not to provoke the man, and LaPierre gave the gun to her, telling her to engage the safety on the weapon. He continued to warn the robber not to struggle, explaining that he was a former boxer who could severely injure him if he tried to get away. He convinced the man not to resist even though the criminal was much bigger, younger and taller than him.
