Goldie Hawn’s Second Husband Bill Claims She Drove Their Kids Away From Him

Goldie Hawn has truly established herself as not just a fantastic actress, but also as an amazing mother and partner. She has famously been with actor Kurt Russell for close to 40 years, and they have a beautiful blended family together.

While the couple continued working prolifically in Hollywood after they got together, they also placed a lot of importance on family. Their blended family consists of children they each brought to their union from their previous marriages, as well as one son they had together. Three of their four children actually followed their famous parents into acting — Oliver Hudson and Kate Hudson, whom Hawn had with her ex-husband Bill Hudson, and Wyatt Russell, the couple's own biological child together. 

But while the Hawn-Russell family is incredibly close and well-known in Hollywood, Oliver and Kate's relationship with their father appears to be quite distant. In fact, Bill opened up about the topic to the Daily Mail in 2011 when he said:

"From the moment Kurt came on the scene my role as father to Kate and Oliver was usurped. Goldie told the kids to call him 'Pa.'"

In another interview with the publication, he claimed that his ex-wife "poisoned" their children against him. In recent years, Oliver and Kate — who have their own podcast together titled "Sibling Revelry" — have spoken out about their father and the fact that they don't have a relationship with him. Kate also spoke candidly during an interview with Howard Stern and said she forgave her father for everything. 

Hawn's Previous Relationships

Hawn's romantic history tells as much a story of her life as her professional career does. Her first marriage was to a dancer named Gus Trikonis, whom she married in 1969. By 1973, however, the couple had split up. She was involved with a few different men before she met and married Bill, a singer who was part of the Hudson Brothers. The couple was married in 1976 and together they had Oliver and Kate before they filed for divorce in 1980 and finalized in 1982.

It was in 1983 that Hawn and Kurt began dating, and the rest is history. For nearly four decades, the couple has been one big happy family with their four children together and nowadays many more grandchildren. The Hudson and Russell blended family have been able to learn a lot from each other, even if they don't agree all the time. In conversation with US Weekly in March 2021, Oliver opened up about how he and Kate have different parenting styles.

"We have different ideas," he said. "There's a core for sure of just wanting our kids to be good human beings, be polite and understand that they're very lucky people to be born into the sort of family we're born into … but it's sort of the way that we go about doing things."

Oliver and Kate's parenting styles are so different that they typically don't share advice with each other unless necessary. "If I feel like I need to speak up, I will," Oliver said. "She does as well." Despite their differences, the siblings have always gotten along well and continue to show off their amazing bond in their podcast "Sibling Revelry."

Oliver's Medical Emergency 

Although the family is incredibly open, one thing that came to light more recently is Oliver's dramatic birth. When Hawn appeared on the "Sibling Revelry" podcast alongside Oliver, she went into detail about just how scary it was to give birth to him. The actress was left completely distraught when her son ended up in the NICU following her emergency cesarean section, according to MSN. She was met with some incredibly hard news to hear. "I learned that my baby might die," Hawn revealed. Hawn told Oliver that he only had a 40% chance of living following his birth. 

"They wheeled me into my room, and it was dark, and all the hallways were dark, and they put me in my bed and the doctor came in and he was very upset," Hawn said. "He said, 'He's going to make it. He's going to make it.'"

Oliver suffered from a medical condition called meconium aspiration. According to John Hopkins Medicine, the condition occurs when a newborn breathes a mixture of stool and amniotic fluid into the lungs around the time of delivery. It typically occurs when the fetus is stressed during labor and can lead to severe illness or death. 

Hawn had been separated from Oliver for a while after he was born while he was in recovery, but was afraid to visit him when she was finally able to.

"I was so afraid I would see you, and I would fall in love with you, and you would die," she told Oliver.

It was a very raw and emotional moment for the mother and son as they reflected on how far Oliver has come since. It's very clear that family is extremely important to everyone in the Hudson-Russell blended family. 

Bill's Estrangement From His Children

Bill went public about not being close with Oliver and Kate in 2011 when he spoke with the Daily Mail. He said he was "usurped" by Kurt and went on to reveal his thoughts about his ex-wife. He said:

"She began to craft this happy family unit. By this time she was a major star, America’s sweetheart. She needed a 'narrative' and I became the big bad wolf."

He claimed that Hawn blocked him from seeing his kids and that "first Kate, then Oliver became distant." He said he "fought for custody of the kids" but that "Goldie and Kurt thwarted (him) at every turn." He added that Kate had "aligned herself with her mother and perpetuated this story about (him) abandoning the family. He said:

"That simply isn’t true. I fought legally and I physically turned up to see them."

He added that he felt that Hawn and Kurt "used their money to take the kids away from (him)." He also spoke about his daughter and it's clear they are not particularly close:

“Kate grew up a pampered Hollywood princess. She needed some drama in her back story and I became that drama.”

Despite the fact that things were already tense, they took a turn for the worse on Father's Day in 2015, when Oliver posted a photo to his Instagram and wished his sister a "happy abandonment day" alongside a photo of the two of them with their father. Additionally, Kate shared a photo of Kurt on her account and called him her dad. 

Following this, Bill spoke to the Daily Mail once again and said:

"I had five birth children but I now consider myself a father of three. I no longer recognise Oliver and Kate as my own. I would ask them to stop using the Hudson name. They are no longer a part of my life."

He called Oliver's Instagram post a "malicious, vicious, premeditated attack" and said he's "dead" to him, "as is Kate." He also spoke about his ex-wife and said, "‘Goldie poisoned them against me." This led Bill to publish a book titled "Two Versions: The Other Side Of Fame & Family" where he opened up about his side of the story. He told the Daily Mail about his ex-wife:

"I am sick and tired of her portraying this squeaky-clean image to the world when the reality of her life is so different. She is manipulative, cruel and selfish. I have done this book because I want to show the flip side of the Hollywood dream. I got caught up in Goldie’s world and I am still paying a painful price." 

Then in 2016, Kate opened up on a SiriusXM show about how her and Oliver's relationship with Bill was at the time. She said:

“We can sort of laugh at what the challenges that we faced together ... I actually feel like it was a blessing. And no matter what (Bill) goes through, I am all forgiveness.”

One year after that she spoke with Howard Stern about her father and said:

“I really do recognize whatever those issues are, it’s just something that he has to live with, and that must be painful for him, so I forgive him.” 

The relationship between Bill and his children is certainly not the best, but perhaps with time, he, Oliver and Kate will make further progress.
