Goldie Hawn's Daughter Kate Hudson Reconnects With Estranged Siblings Years After Father Left

Actress Kate Hudson is perhaps best known for her roles as the enigmatic Penny Lane in "Almost Famous" and stubborn Andie Anderson in "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days." However, before experiencing commercial success, Kate was already a recognizable face as the daughter of actress Goldie Hawn and musician Bill Hudson. However, Kate was actually raised by Kurt Russell, an action figure actor who happens to be her mom's boyfriend. She grew up in the relative limelight. The actress would often draw comparisons to her star-studded parents, even though she had carved out her own path in Hollywood.

Kate made her film debut in 1998 with the drama "Desert Blue," followed by numerous supporting roles in the years that followed. It wasn't long before she began landing roles that helped make her the leading actress she is today, including films such as "You, Me and Dupree," "Fool's Gold," and "Bride Wars." Kate has a knack for comedy, especially romantic comedies, as she is hilariously charming and witty.

While the mentions of her parents still come, Kate remains unfazed. She often mentions her mother, in particular, as a source of inspiration and strength. Kate also speaks fondly of Russell, whom she considers to be her father. 

On the other hand, her biological father, Bill, is someone that Kate and her brother, Oliver Hudson, have ostracized in their lives. At one point, they even shared with the world how he abandoned them. Despite this, Kate's feelings toward her estranged siblings from Bill did not falter. She even admitted to being emotional when she reconnected with them. 

Hawn and Russell are one of the most enduring couples in all of Hollywood. Although they have decided not to marry, the two have been in a committed and loving relationship since 1983. In effect, Russell has adopted Oliver and Kate, making them his stepchildren. In the past, Kate has publicly shared her affection for her stepfather. On Russell's 70th birthday, she shared an old throwback photo of them with the caption:

"I often wonder how different our life would have been if he never entered the picture. How different I would be. Let me fill you in."

The actress continued:

"He's a pick up your boot straps kinda dad. Don't cry, shake it off you're ok, kinda dad. Don't let 'em push you around you got this, kinda dad. Don't listen to the noise you're doing great, kinda dad…Never miss a show or game, kinda dad. Kids before anything, kinda dad. Work hard play hard, kinda dad. My girl can rule the world, kinda dad."

It is heartwarming to know that Russell has had such a profound impact on all his children. This was a conscious choice on the part of the parents, however, as Russell said in an interview with the Daily Mail in 2018:

"Everyone has their marker on what is really important and where you draw the line. For Goldie and me, that core value was this: the kids come first. That big movie I turned down came at an age when they really needed one of us around."

Kate had also spoken about how important her parents are to her in an interview with People in 2020:

"Mom is kinetic and she is a butterfly. And Pa likes his family and his home. But when they're together, it's so powerful."

From Hawn's side, the couple has six grandchildren. Oliver shares three children with his wife, Erinn Bartlett: Wilder, Bodhi, and Rio. Meanwhile, Hawn is also grandmother to Kate's three children: Ryder, Bingham, from her previous marriage to Matt Bellamy, and Rani with singer Danny Fujikawa. Moreover, Wyatt Russell, Hawn and Russell's biological son, welcomed his first child with his wife, Meredith Hagner, and the couple named him Buddy. In an Instagram post, Hagner revealed that he was born two weeks after they had a photo shoot for Vogue Magazine.

According to Hello! Magazine, Hawn is "incredibly close" to all her grandchildren and was even present for all of their births. Hawn told Australian Women's Weekly: "A good family is the answer to happiness." She continued:

"I look at our kids and grandchildren and there's nothing in the world that could make me as proud as I am of all of them. Being a grandmother is amazing, I love it. It brings incredible joy. Family is so important."

Russell and Hawn have successfully created a warm and loving family atmosphere. Not to mention that Russell has fostered a very close relationship with Oliver and Kate. However, the opposite can be said about the two's biological father. 

Unbeknownst to many, Kate and Oliver have an estranged relationship with their father, Bill. In fact, in June 2015, Bill said in a candid interview with The Daily Mail that he "no longer recognizes" Oliver and Kate as his own, stating:

"I would ask them to stop using the Hudson name. They are no longer a part of my life. Oliver's Instagram post was a malicious, vicious, premeditated attack. He is dead to me now. As is Kate. I am mourning their loss even though they are still walking this earth." 

Bill was referring to Oliver's Instagram post at the time, where he shared an old photo of the three of them with a pretty damning declaration. He tagged Kate and wrote in the caption:

"Happy abandonment day…"

A few days later, Kate also shared a photo on the same platform, calling Russell her "Pa." Kate and Oliver voiced out their emotions and reflected on their family dynamics on their podcast "Sibling Revelry." In a January 2024 episode, Oliver and Kate recalled reconnecting with their estranged sisters from Bill:

"I had this moment last year where I was like, 'I don't know why I don't talk to my other siblings."

She continued:

"I don't care what the history is with our parents … I have two sisters that I don't speak to for no other reason than our family is separated."

Later in the episode, the actress revealed that they had reconnected with them: "My sister and I and my brother have all just started communicating again." She continued: "And honestly, I got on the phone with my sister and we just started bawling our eyes out. It was great. (My sister) even said it. We start now. We start now."
