Goldie Hawn Reveals Relationship Secret As She Gushes Over Her Family Life With Kurt Russell

Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn met in 1968 while filming "The One And Only, Genuine, Original Family Band," a Disney musical film. They started dating after they co-starred in "Swing Shift" (1984). From there, they appeared together in 1987's "Overboard." It wouldn't be until the 21st century that they appeared together again in "The Christmas Chronicles" (2018) and its 2020 sequel.

Over nearly 40 years, Hawn and Russell have been longtime partners, lovers and among the few mainstay couples that last in Hollywood. The pair revealed the secret to their long-term chemistry — both onscreen and off — in a November 2020 interview on CBS Chat.

There's no doubt that Hawn and Russell are big-screen icons. In their CBS Chat interview, the power couple spoke about filmmaking and family. To both, family clearly comes first. Hawn said that a close family bond was key, noting, "Because relationships go through periods, sometimes really hard times, but there's nothing sweeter than having a family. And that is worth everything."

At 75, Hawn said there was essentially no secret to their relationship success beyond the fact that they simply wanted to be together. But for Russell, the love affair had a rocky start. He admits that he was hardly at his best back in 1983 when he first interacted with Hawn on the set of "Swing Shift." By his own admission, he was not good at relationships, so he could simply be himself with very little to prove. Luckily, he was able to set his own personal standard to live up to. Russell had just gone through a nasty divorce and, by his own admission, he was not at his peak during that 1983 reunion. "The first time I met her I was horribly hungover. I didn't try to put my best foot forward, because it's a hard thing to hold that up," he said. It is clear that, despite this poor reintroduction, Hawn liked what she saw. The two look on that meeting as one of many treasured memories they can now laugh about. 

Four children and seven grandchildren later, they relish the sense of fun they have maintained since their early days together. Especially with their seventh grandchild here, they see the playfulness as a vital part and the center of family life. According to a family associate, they have a carefree and fun-filled approach to raising their kids and grandkids. To them, one more grandchild will only increase the fun.

They have had their share of difficult times, scandals, successes, failures and great moments. From the beginning and throughout all this, they admitted to Closer Weekly, "not breaking up is their mantra." They also seldom star in movies together. This isn't a relationship secret, though. According to The New York Times, it is simply because they gravitate to different types of movies. "The Christmas Chronicles" marked the first time in over 30 years they had been in a film together. The reason? As Hawn puts it, "Material! Really, it’s about the material, and it just didn’t come along."

In many ways, they are also typical parents and grandparents. Hawn regularly posts videos and pictures of their kids and grandkids on social media. Such posts include a priceless Instagram video of Hawn dancing with her kids while washing dishes in the kitchen. Other posts are of son Oliver Hudson and granddaughter Rio making pizza in their Los Angeles home. He sports rolled-up sleeves, a gray hat and a lump of dough in his hands. She holds a rolling pin and — in typically "Oh, Dad" fashion — attempts to smile for the camera.

Hawn's caption tells you a lot about their family life. “Sometimes one picture says everything!! LOVE #happysunday.” The post garnered many likes and comments, with fans noting the resemblance between Rio and Hawn's actress daughter, Kate Hudson. Oliver Hudson and sister Kate Hudson, both Hollywood alums, have their own Instagram accounts as well. Many fans have said the Rio-Kate resemblance is simply uncanny.

Their seven grandchildren are Bingham Bellamy, Rani Rose and Ryder Robinson from daughter Kate and Bodhi Hudson, as well as Rio Hudson and Wilder Hudson from their son Oliver. The family often jokes that Rio is Hawn's "Mini-Me," although all of the grandchildren seem to resemble Hawn in striking and various ways.

It is clear that a strong family has been essential to Russell and Hawn's survival as a couple. In fact, after a separation in 2004 due to mutual infidelity, it was family considerations that helped them stay together. At the time, though, a trial separation following an attempt at an open relationship seemed like the death knell for the couple. A close family friend told Closer Weekly, "It was rough, but ultimately they were in it for the long haul. And their children were a big part of that decision. They weren’t about to tear up their family.” 

From that point on, Hawn and Russell's bond only became stronger. Hawn had been married twice before she got together with divorcee Russell. She won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in "Cactus Flower" in 1969. Through success and down times, through thick and thin, they have stayed together with the help of their family.

In a 2017 interview with The Daily Mail, Hawn gushed about how she fell in love with Russell and what a good father and grandfather he is. "He was so good-looking. I had no pretense about him. I could tell right away he wasn't a womanizer." Seeing him as a family man is what eventually won Hawn over. "What really got me was when I watched my kids when they’d come to the set and how he was with them," she told the same source. "He was amazing with them. He was such a natural."

Both Russell and Hawn remain Hollywood royalty. She recently posted stills from 30 years of her films with the caption, "Pictures are worth a thousand words." This post alone has garnered over 150,000 likes and had one fan saying, "I could not adore you more than I already do," and remarking that the actress continually makes the world a brighter place.
