Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell are one of Hollywood's most enduring couples. Hawn is an actress who turned 76 years old in 2021, while Russell is five years her junior. Over the course of almost four decades together, the pair have built a beautiful, blended family full of talented individuals.

Hawn and Russell have an adorable and loving relationship, and their obvious affection for each other is more akin to a pair of teenage sweethearts than a couple that has been together for 39 years. While Hawn and Russell have both been married to other people before settling down together, they themselves have never been married. Instead, they have enjoyed and are still currently enjoying a long-lasting and fulfilling relationship – even without exchanging vows.

The couple is also well known for their big family, which consists of Hawn's two children from her first marriage: Oliver Hudson and Kate Hudson. Russell's son Boston Russell is from his first marriage. The couple also has a joint son together named Wyatt Russell. Somewhat unsurprisingly, most of their children have followed their famous acting parents into show business and have also gone on to have children of their own – making Hawn and Russell grandparents.

Many people have wondered how Hawn and Russell have managed to have such a happy and long-lasting relationship, especially in Hollywood. Fortunately, the couple has opened up about personal details of their partnerships over the years and have even shown their affection for each other in their social media posts. Let's take a look at their relationship over the years, what it looks like today and how they manage to keep things fresh and exciting.

Hawn and Russell first met on the set of the Disney movie "The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band" when she was 21, but he was still a teenager in 1966. While she was intrigued, she said he was far too young for her at the time.

"I was 21 and he was 16," Hawn recollected in a BBC interview in 2012. "I thought he was adorable, but he was much too young. Then, years later we met up again, and I remembered that I liked him very much when I first met him. We both said we would never go out with another actor so it just shows you never can tell."

As for their first date in 1983, in a 2017 interview with Conan O'Brien, Russell said he did not expect it to go very well.

"I was severely hungover and I didn't know Goldie at all outside of having worked with her those many years before," Russell told Conan. "I just didn't have in my mind what I was going to see, and she had a great body. So the first thing that came out was, 'Man, you've got a great figure.' It came out quickly and it could've gone wrong, and she said, 'Why thank you.'"

After they finally got together, the couple became inseparable and even starred in more movies together, including 1987's "Overboard," which was a big hit, and more recently in "The Christmas Chronicles" in 2018 and "The Christmas Chronicles 2" in 2020, where fittingly, Russell played Santa Claus and Hawn played Mrs. Claus.

Even though they have both been married before and have now been together for 39 years, the pair have no plans of marrying each other.

Hawn openly discussed the topic in a 2007 interview with Woman's Day magazine. When asked why they won't head down the aisle, Hawn responded:

"Because we have done just perfectly without marrying. I already feel devoted and isn't that what marriage is supposed to do? So as long as my emotional state is in a state of devotion, honesty, caring and loving, then we're fine."

In 2015, she said:

"I would have been long divorced if I'd been married. Marriage is an interesting psychological thing. If you need to feel bound to someone, then it's important to be married. If you have independence, if you have enough money and sense of independence and you like your independence, there's something psychological about not being married because it gives you the freedom to make decisions one way or the other. For me, I chose to stay. Kurt chose to stay, and we like the choice."

Russell also talked about what really matters in his relationship with the Daily Mail in 2018. He said, "Everyone has their marker on what is really important and where you draw the line. For Goldie and me, that core value was this: the kids come first."

When it comes to the secrets behind their long-lasting love, Russell and Hawn explained to Parade in November 2020 that it boils down to the intention to be happy and purpose – and a little bit of fun doesn't hurt either.

"It's not about what you do, it's how you do it," Hawn explained as Russell added, "Goldie can literally physically walk away sometimes and make me laugh. She's funny by nature. She just… is."

Another of the cute couple's secrets is being sure to fully appreciate each other when they can. Speaking to People in an April 2020 interview alongside her actress daughter Kate, Hawn gave an example of how Russell does this while making her feel beautiful, even in her 70s.

"The other night we were going to go have dinner. He looks at me and goes, 'You're unbelievable. He said 'I cannot believe how (beautiful) you look.' He really appreciates that."

Hawn's 41-year-old daughter Kate piped in to describe how much she admired her mother's relationship with Russell, whom she affectionately calls "Pa." She called their union "really the goal."

"You and Pa have been together for so long and sometimes I look at it and I'm like, How do you guys do it?'" Hudson said. "I'm still working on that."

In the same interview, Hudson explained how Russell and Hudson have maintained a unit for the family, even through times of turmoil. "They really are the center of all of our lives," she said, before adding that the two "complement each other well."

"Mom is kinetic and she is a butterfly. And Pa likes his family and his home. But when they're together, it's so powerful."

Over the years, Hawn said she and Russell have established a harmonic balance in their relationship, something she felt was crucial for any relationship to be successful.

"You want to stay in your power, but you also want to be forgiving. And you want to understand and have compassion for the other person," she explained further to People.

"If you cannot do that, then you're not giving yourself a real fair chance at a long-term relationship. And that's a lesson that we all have to learn."
