Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell are no strangers to Hollywood success, but watching their daughter Kate Hudson shine on screen in “Song Sung Blue” proved to be an exceptionally emotional experience. The film, inspired by the real-life Neil Diamond tribute band Lightning & Thunder, follows Claire Sardina, played by Kate, as she forms a tribute duo with Mike Sardina, portrayed by Hugh Jackman. Set in 1989, the story explores ambition, connection, and the unexpected ways creative partnerships can turn into something deeply personal.
The reaction from Hawn and Kurt underscored the powerful intersection of art and family. Their blended family includes four children: Boston Russell, whom Kurt shares with ex-wife Season Hubley; Kate and Oliver Hudson from Hawn’s previous marriage to Bill Hudson; and Wyatt Russell, the couple’s youngest child. After Hawn and Bill finalized their divorce in 1982, she began a relationship with Kurt in 1983. Over the decades, Kate has consistently referred to Kurt as her father figure, a role he has embraced for more than 40 years.
That shared history gave Kate’s performance added meaning and the emotional response it sparked. Speaking about the film, Kate has openly discussed how deeply it affected her, both personally and professionally. In an interview with PEOPLE in December 2025, she described how emotional conversations about the project became a near-daily occurrence. “I cry every day ‘cause every time Hugh and I start talking about the movie, we get so emotional,” she said. Reflecting on her sensitivity, Hudson added, “I cry really easy. I’m an easy crier. ... I could look at an Instagram and start (crying). Especially (posts) of kids saying something profound will make me cry.” She later noted, “I think I probably cry at least once every other day,” adding, “Crying is always a good thing. It really is.”

The emotional weight of “Song Sung Blue” was on full display during a post-screening panel at AMC The Grove 14 in Los Angeles on Jan. 13, 2026. Moderating the Q&A, Hawn, 80, revealed that she and Kurt, 74, were overcome with emotion while watching an early cut of the film. Despite the version being unfinished, the impact was immediate and profound.
Explaining that she had not cried at a movie like that since she was 11 years old, Hawn shared Kurt’s reaction, revealing that he had called Kate “the greatest actress of all time,” adding, “And he does not say those things.” Hawn then recalled the moment in vivid detail:
“When I first saw this movie, Kurt and I were sitting together and it wasn't totally put together yet. So it wasn't color corrected, there were certain things they needed to do and balance the sound and everything and make it the whole finished movie. But the two of us held onto each other and cried.”
Turning directly to her daughter, Hawn emphasized the performance that moved them most.
“From the minute you did the Patsy Cline song!” she said, continuing, “I mean, literally cried. And it was like one of those moments where we thought, 'What have we just seen?' And it was such (an) extraordinary surprise.”
The conversation naturally shifted to family. Kate described the film as being “about chosen family, too, which was something that's very relatable to us.” Hawn agreed, drawing a comparison between Jackman’s character and Kurt himself.
“You know, he looked so much like Kurt,” she said, before adding, “Because actually that's what Kurt did, came into my life and took on our family.”
Kate summed it up:
“It's a heroic thing to do.”
