Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell are one of Hollywood's most enduring couples, having spent nearly four decades together. While they've never hidden their love—they often show affection and frequently feature each other in their social media posts—they've now gone on the record in an interview with People Magazine, detailing exactly what they love about each other, and what drives them crazy too!

Hollywood golden couple Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell are well known for their decades-long love story, having been together for 38 years. The two actors are no strangers to starring in movies together—after all, they began dating after filming Swing Shift together in 1983 and even appeared in more movies together afterward. A couple of years ago they teamed up again on camera to star in the movie The Christmas Chronicles and its sequel The Christmas Chronicles 2, which was just released in November 2020. In the movies, they fittingly play the roles of Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus—what an iconic pairing to play the beloved characters!

In a December 2020 interview with People Magazine, the couple opened up about the specific things they love about each other, and what drives them crazy. In the interview, which took place over Zoom, Russell began by saying, "I love the things that happen in our life and whatever part of it that I am, I’m happy for..." before Hawn interrupts him to say, "So far I'm not in this story." But Russell continues on:

"Hang on, it’s coming. Wait for it. The way she is when she’s happy is irresistible. I like that. That’s what I love most about Goldie."

We know what he means. Goldie Hawn has an infectious, bubbly personality that is simply a joy to watch in movies or interviews, so it's no surprise that it's Russell's favorite thing about his partner. Meanwhile, Hawn's favorite thing about Russell is quite simple. She says:

"Like it or not, he can’t lie. I mean, he’s lied a little. But the truth of the matter is that what you see is what you get. He doesn’t fake. He’s not a womanizer, where he’s [trying to be] cool. I like the fact that he’s not pretending to be somebody else."

Although Hawn also sees the playfulness in Russell as well, adding that, "he has a child in him. He loves to play. He laughs big." She also says that he's "really, really smart" and that when he puts his mind to something, although he can be a little "obsessive-compulsive" he'll always get it right. She gushes further about her life partner:

"I think he’s one of the great actors of all time. And he’s a fantastic father. So I win because I can think exactly what I love about him."

Russell laughs at Hawn's comment and adds, "I like it when she wins." And as for the things that drive them crazy about each other? Everyone knows that despite how much you love your partner they're bound to do something, no matter how small, that irks you. For Russell, it's the fact that they can't agree on whether to keep a light on at night or sleep in darkness. He prefers a light of some kind so that if the need to get up arises, you can see where you're going, but Hawn prefers to sleep in a dark room. Hawn explains:

"And I'll say, 'Honey, can you turn the light off?' And he says, 'Don't you need a nightlight somewhere?' Now that's 38 years of this same conversation. The answer is no, I like a dark room."

But Russell is quick to give his side of the story:

"So when I bang on the walls when I have to get up to go to the bathroom, we now understand why. If you ever see bruises it's generally a middle of the night thing because I couldn't find the doorway."

Surprisingly, the thing that annoys Russell about Hawn is also just as relatable an issue. It's related to the way she makes her cappuccino. He explains:

"The little spinner things they have to make the milk, she will not, after she's made hers, she will not clean it out. Just throw a little water in there, clean it out, put it back up. So I wake up in the morning and there it is, caked on the thing, and it's just salmonella waiting for you to drink it."

Hawn admits it is true, adding that the reason she leaves it is that she thinks she'll make another cup of coffee and doesn't want to waste the milk, but then she forgets about it. Who would have thought that Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell would have two annoying but rather endearing habits that make them even more likable in our eyes?

Kurt and Goldie have been together since 1983, initially meeting in 1966 while filming together but then reconnecting on the set of their film Swing Shift. They've been inseparable ever since, even going on to star in further movies together after becoming romantically involved.

Family plays a big part in their life, with the couple creating a blended family over their nearly four decades together. They share son Wyatt Russell and have co-parented all their children from previous relationships. Kurt Russell has a son, Boston Russell from a previous marriage to Season Hubley, while Hawn has children Kate and Oliver Hudson with ex-husband Bill Hudson. Adding to that, the couple has seven grandchildren—Oliver shares three children with his wife Erinn Bartlett: Wilder, 13, Bodhi, 10, and Rio, 6. Meanwhile, Kate has three children too: Ryder, 16, Bingham, 9, from her previous marriage to Matt Bellamy, and one-year-old Rani with singer Danny Fujikawa.

In terms of how they've managed to create such a warm and loving family atmosphere, Russell and Hawn have been able to do so since spending quality time together is one of their priorities in life. "We always trim the tree on Christmas Eve and we have a big meal,” Russell told Closer Weekly. "The grandkids put their pajamas on and hang up their stockings. We get the fire going and when it gets dark we always choose someone to read ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.'" In an interview with People Magazine from April 2020, Hudson said of Hawn and Russell as a couple:

"To live up to that is really the goal. Just the fact that they’ve been able to maintain a unit for all of us, in times of turmoil, they really are the center of all of our lives."

In a video from the same People interview, Hudson described how her parents have their differences, but that this can also bring together balance. She said:

“Mom is kinetic and she is a butterfly. And Pa likes his family and his home. But when they’re together, it’s so powerful.” Hawn also added, "When you have your children and you have a man who loves your children, that’s a very tough bond."

However, one interesting thing about their relationship is that the couple never chose to get married. Hawn openly discussed the topic in a 2007 interview with Woman's Day magazine. Asked why they won't head down the aisle, Hawn responded:

"Because we have done just perfectly without marrying. I already feel devoted and isn't that what marriage is supposed to do? So as long as my emotional state is in a state of devotion, honesty, caring and loving, then we're fine."

She goes on to mention their children and how they've managed to raise them into "beautiful people," adding:

"We did a great job there and we didn't have to get married to do that. I like waking up every day and seeing that he is there and knowing that I have a choice. There is really no reason to marry."

Hawn even told Australian Women's Weekly, as per Hello! Magazine, "A good family is the answer to happiness." She added:

"I look at our kids and grandchildren and there's nothing in the world that could make me as proud as I am of all of them. Being a grandmother is amazing, I love it. It brings incredible joy. Family is so important."

Considering Hawn and Russell's relationship is one of Hollywood's longest-lasting, they've clearly proven their point that marriage is unnecessary as long as there is love, respect, and mutual compassion towards one another. They truly make being in a relationship look easy. In a December 2020 interview with People, they discussed how working together "was like a vacation." Hawn adds:

"We wanted to be good together. I mean, there’s lots of things that bother you in life like, 'You never take out the trash!' or crazy stuff like that. But in terms of working together, that was just a piece of cake."

38 years on and still going strong, it's no wonder Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell are one of Hollywood's favorite couples.
