Golden Retriever And Duck Spark Unlikely Friendship

In this video from 2017, a gorgeous golden retriever named Barclay has found deep friendship with a then four-year-old Pekin duck called Rudy. While their first interaction had to set some solid boundaries, since that day they've built a strong friendship in their Orange County home, says pet-mom Pan Ishiguro.

Once Rudy the Duck knew that Barclay was both gentle and patient, they started bonding. Both enjoy time in front of the sliding glass door watching the rainfall, and snuggling on the dog bed is always a nice way to nap. When outdoors together, they like to linger by the duck pond and share a snack.

Share a Meal!
Barclay has determined that duck food is delicious. He has a varied palette that includes stolen human food as well. Early on, this was a source of some distress and conflict between the two. Now that both have determined that they can work together, duck food is shared, and Barclay even serves as a high seat of honor when getting a sip from the duck pond. Rudy can be the alpha male of all he surveys.
Exclusive Friendship
Barclay is not the only dog in the house. There's also a terrier named Izzy who stalked and menaced the ducks when they were little. Now that Rudy is bigger than Izzy, the paybacks have begun. Time spent with Barclay may be fun, but Izzy is not allowed in the club.
Territorial Leadership in a Duck?
Rudy, as the alpha male duck of the flock, comes by his territorial tendencies naturally. As a mild-mannered pack animal, it makes sense that Barclay would allow Rudy to direct traffic in the home and correct Barclay when he gets a bit too friendly. This relationship suits both personalities perfectly.
The teamwork and camaraderie of Rudy and Barclay could be a great lesson for others. Relax together. Be generous and share a meal together. Embrace the individuality of those around you. Most importantly, look out for each other and provide a safe space for your loved ones to hang out.
