Golden Retriever Acts As "Guardian Angel" To Five Newborn Kittens

Cats and dogs are famous for their enmity towards each other. Many cartoons and movies portray them as implacable mortal enemies. A video of a Golden Retriever playing babysitter to some young kittens demonstrates that this isn’t always the case.

The video shows the dog quietly watching over the kittens and their parents, who don’t seem to mind the dog’s presence. The average adult cat weighs roughly 10 pounds, while the average Golden Retriever can weigh between 55 and 75 pounds. While the cat has agility and claws on its side, the dog has superior size and strength.

Fortunately for the feline family, Golden Retrievers are famous for their gentle and friendly personalities. They get along great with children and other dogs and get along well with cats, rabbits, and other pets providing the owner handles the introductions properly.

Since somebody had to film the video clips, they were presumably also watching the dog and cats for signs of trouble. The first clip shows the dog lying down resting its nose in the cats’ bed, while the mother cat, a beautiful orange and white tabby, cares for her five newborn kittens. Interestingly, the kittens have folded ears, indicating Scottish Fold ancestry, while their mother has normal straight ears.

The other two clips were filmed several weeks later, for the kittens are significantly bigger and have opened their eyes. A kitten’s eyes typically open by the time they are two weeks old.

The last clip shows the kitten’s father, a white Scottish Fold, resting with his family. While three of the kittens are a shade of orange, like their mother, two appear to be gray tabbies. How did that happen?

The second clip shows the kittens with the Golden Retriever, and neither feline parent is in sight. The dog is simply resting, letting the kittens stay near or even on it. The kittens don’t show any fear, and one of the orange kittens even sits by the dog’s head, obviously trusting the much larger animal to not harm it.

It’s evident the owners of these animals did a creditable job of introducing the dog and adult cats to each other, as both cats seem perfectly at ease with the dog. Nor does the mother cat object to having the Golden Retriever near her newborn kittens.
