After nearly five decades together, Gloria and Emilio Estefan have built a life filled with music, family and shared dreams. But when it comes to keeping their marriage strong, the couple says the little things still matter most.

The pair recently celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary, marking 50 years since they first got together. Over the years, they have raised two children, built successful careers and kept making each other laugh.

Gloria, 69, and Emilio, 73, married in 1978, about three years after they met. Their family grew to include their son, Nayib, 46, and their daughter, Emily, 31.

Despite their decades together, Gloria says their relationship has never stopped evolving. She has also credited their shared values and priorities, from music to business, with helping them navigate life as partners.

“We get along great,” the “Conga!” singer told PEOPLE. “He makes me laugh even when he’s not intending to.”

Gloria added that they rarely argue about what matters most because they tend to see eye to eye. Her affection for her husband has only grown over time.

“I love him deeply, deeply more every day,” she said.

The couple's anniversary celebrations offered another glimpse into that enduring connection. On Sept. 2, Gloria shared a tribute to Emilio on Instagram, celebrating the life they have built together.

“HAPPY 48th ANNIVERSARY, MILLO!” she wrote. “We’ve officially been together 50 years and I would still choose YOU every single year and forever! Te quiero mucho, mi morito!”

She also wished their son a happy 46th birthday, noting that he was born exactly two years after their wedding and would always be their best anniversary gift.

Emilio returned the affection with a message of his own, reflecting on the family they had built and the dreams they had shared.

For Emilio, staying connected after so many years means making an effort every day, not simply waiting for special occasions.

“Every day is an anniversary,” he told PEOPLE, explaining that couples should continue surprising each other and remembering to say “I love you.”

That philosophy has remained part of their relationship throughout their marriage. In a 2018 interview with Entertainment Tonight, the couple also discussed the importance of respect, love and humor.

Emilio jokingly described one supposed secret to their marriage, saying that as a Latino husband, he would tell his wife, “Yes, baby, whatever you want.”

Gloria quickly challenged his explanation. “That is such a crock,” she responded. “You know what? He makes me laugh every single day of my life.”

Their anniversary tributes reflected that same affection. Emilio's Instagram message, written in Spanish and English, thanked Gloria for the life they had built together.

“After 48 years together, I continue to thank God for you, for the beautiful family we have built, and for every dream we have shared,” he wrote. “You are an extraordinary woman, my lifelong partner, and someone I admire more each day. Happy anniversary my love.”

The couple recently reflected on their marriage while speaking with PEOPLE at the 41st Annual Great Sports Legends Dinner in New York City on Oct. 5, an event that raises money for paralysis research.

For Gloria, the passing years have not made their relationship feel old or distant. If anything, their time together has gone by faster than she could have imagined.

“We learn from each other every day,” the 69-year-old singer told PEOPLE on Oct. 5 at the 41st Annual Great Sports Legends Dinner in New York City. “We’ve been together 50 years, married 48. But to be honest, it feels like a flash. It feels like we got married yesterday.”
