Klynn Scales had a difficult childhood growing up in Kansas City, Missouri. Living with her mother and two brothers in a home filled with drugs and violence, Klynn would have often have to steal from a local 7/11 to get food for herself and her siblings. In all the horrors she witnessed, Klynn came to trust only one person, a local police officer who had his patrol near her house.

Klynn met the officer when she was just 9 years old and the two developed a quick friendship. Speaking with reporters from WDAF News, Klynn says that the officer came to understand that she and her brothers had a complicated upbringing and took an interest in the family.

Every day on his patrol, Klynn would greet him with a wave as the officer promised to always be there if they needed help. Klynn later recalled how the officer’s promise of help got her through some of the darkest times of her childhood, even though she didn’t even know his name.

According to ABC13, one day the officer, Sergeant Jeff Colvin, became suspicious when Klynn didn’t greet him. Sergeant Colvin immediately entered the home through the front door only to be horrified by the sight before his eyes.

Klynn was dangerously sick and no one in the home was taking care of her. Sergeant Colvin took Klynn in his arms and brought her to the hospital, where she was treated for malnutrition.

Afterward, Sergeant Colvin lost contact with Klynn when she moved to Austin, Texas. Even after almost 20 years, Sergeant Colvin never forgot Klynn and wondered what happened to her. Klynn never forgot Sergeant Colvin either, crediting him with saving her life all those years ago.

Still not knowing his name, Klynn emailed the Kansas City Police Department asking for help reuniting with her rescuer, describing where she lived and the specifics of the case. The department eventually tracked down Sergeant Colvin and Klynn got to tell him in person how grateful she is for everything that he did for her as a child.

As Klynn and Sergeant Colvin shared a hug, the veteran law enforcement official said that he is happy to have made a positive difference in her life. What do you think of Klynn and Sergeant Colvin’s story? Was there ever someone in your life as a child that you could go to for help no matter the situation?
