Girl Tells Father She Wants A Boyfriend But Dad Shuts Down Idea Quickly With Cheeky Comeback

Parents will do anything to protect their children, and when the eventual topic of dating comes up, it's not uncommon to see parents, especially fathers, become extra protective about this, particularly when it applies to their daughters. But often that conversation begins in a child's teenage years, not when they're practically still a toddler.

That's what happened when four-year-old Grace Tierney told her dad John that she wanted to get a boyfriend. John's comical response to her statement had us bowling over with laughter, while the conversation that ensued between them was just as hilarious.

Taking place in the car, John Tierney is seated in the front seat, while his daughter Grace is in the back. He's recording the exchange, which makes the video even funnier since he is holding the camera and therefore in control of the situation, while Grace is in the back where clearly her words bear no weight.

She begins by saying "I want to get a boyfriend" before her father says, with a smile on his face, "Daddy'll break his legs," clearly joking, but maybe not really! To which Grace replies, "Noooo!" while John adds, "Yes I will," while still smiling. The two bickering about such a relatable topic is hilarious, but especially so because of Grace's age and John's clear sarcasm during the discussion.

Realizing he has triggered Grace's frustration in a way that only parents can do to their children, John digs deeper into the joke and adds: "And guess what'll happen after that? See your boyfriend's daddy? Daddy'll take him hostage and keep him in a cupboard." It's all the more funny because Grace is entertaining the conversation like a real adult, listening intently and patiently.

Once he's said his part, instead of getting annoyed as she did earlier, she calmly says to her father: "Dad, listen...I want a boyfriend, I want a boyfriend, I'm getting a boyfriend." Grace clearly knows what she's after –– even if she is only four-years-old –– and won't stop at anything, including her father's word.

Realizing his over-the-top humor isn't working with the now-calm Grace, John dials it up even further and announces: "You're not going to get a boyfriend, you're going to be a nun. You're going to work for Jesus!" while pulling out the cross that he's wearing on his neck.

At this point Grace has lost it once again, yelling, "I am! I'm going to get a boyfriend!" as her and her dad lovingly bicker on. John knows as the parent he has the final word, which he delivers while saying, "End of story" at the end of the video.

What makes this exchange so funny is how adamant both John and Grace are about their viewpoints, while the absurdity of Grace being only four-years-old is what really carries the joke home. On top of that, it's completely relatable, for both parents and children –– who hasn't had this conversation at some point in their lives?! The video has been viewed over 30 million times, no doubt by many people who are familiar with the subject matter.
