It’s always incredibly inspiring and heartwarming to see a couple with a truly great story that makes you realize they were simply made for each other. These fairytale-style love stories melt our hearts and make us want to follow that couple’s love story as close as we can, even if it’s just through social media or a simple news article.
In the age where more than 50% of marriages are statistically likely to end in divorce, there’s always time to follow a couple with a wonderful love story. It’s also always wonderful to hear a how-we-met story that seems like the universe planned the meeting all along.
Emily and Cameron Kohlman have a story that can’t help but inspire you to say “aww!” It seemed like the universe was working in overdrive to align a series of perfect coincidences that brought the two together in what could have been a very depressing situation. Emily Kohlman wrote to Love What Matters in 2017 describing their beautiful love story.
When Emily was just four years old, she was lying in a hospital bed at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore waiting to undergo surgery. As young as she was, she had no idea that her future husband was not only in the same hospital, but he was waiting for the same exact surgery.

Both Emily and Cameron were born were the exact same birth defect. The two lived with the birth defect of bladder exstrophy during their youth and were both in Johns Hopkins waiting for a world-renowned surgeon to perform the surgery that would alleviate the effects of this birth defect.
Dr. Robert Jeffs would perform the surgery on both Emily and Cameron as their parents waited patiently for results, with neither family knowing that their child’s shared birth defect would eventually lead to a lifetime of love and happiness.
Emily came to Johns Hopkins from Wisconsin and Cameron from Ohio. The two bonded at an incredibly young age and shared their first kiss at the Ronald McDonald House.
"In 2006, after many years of friendship, we fell in love. I might argue I fell in love with Cameron in 1995, the first time he kissed me at the Ronald McDonald House. Our love was endless, relentless even. People thought we were foolish through high school in a long-distance relationship, counting down the moments until we could start our lives together. We proved each of them wrong. " she wrote.
However, Emily and Cameron proved their friends wrong when they got engaged in 2015. Emily became pregnant soon after and the couple worried their baby would be born with bladder exstrophy. However, when she was just 21 weeks pregnant, they found out that their baby’s bladder was inside and they gave birth to a healthy baby girl.
