When you cross paths with a random stranger who impacted your life, it’s certainly not unusual for you to think or wonder years later what that person might be up to now. After all, you had that unforgettable encounter at one point in your life. But just what are the chances for two people to meet again years later, especially when they never even got the chance to share a conversation and only had a brief encounter when they first met each other?

In June 2015, a reunion broke the internet – and it was all because it was one of the most touching reunions ever between two people who were never really strangers but only got to know each other years later.

When Dawnielle Davison was just nine months old, her home in Wenatchee, Washington, caught fire. But her life was spared from the fire thanks to a brave firefighter who came to save her from the crib in her bedroom.

When she reached 7th grade, she received a random message on Facebook from a person whom she thought she had never met in her life. Little did she know that it was the exact same person – a retired fire captain named Mike Hughes – who saved her life.

Davison admitted that she had no idea about everything that happened on that day 17 years ago.

“I was just kind of confused at first. I didn’t know any of this had happened,” Davison told TODAY.

Davison knew she couldn’t just trust anyone, so she made sure it was him by giving him a test.

“I sent her a note that said, ‘I think I pulled you out of a fire when you were a baby,’” Hughes shared

“And she gave me a test…she wrote back, ‘Oh yeah, what was my mom doing?’” he remarked.

“I replied, ‘Well she was at work and your dad was there,’” Hughes said.

Thankfully, Hughes got it right.

When Davison’s parents confirmed everything to her, she finally messaged Hughes back – and yes, they have become close friends ever since. In fact, Hughes would even attend Davison’s track meets to support her and cheer her on.

Davison knew Hughes wasn’t just any other friend – he was the one who saved her life. So when one of the most important milestones in her life finally came, she made sure that he would be part of it.

When she finally graduated from high school, she invited him to her graduation ceremony.

“I thought it would be really nice to have him come to my graduation,” Davison said. “I feel like I owe him a lot,” he added.

Hughes, for his part, admitted that it made him happy to get invited to Davison’s graduation.

“It was really cool for her to invite me. For her to acknowledge me, and be happy about it, that’s just really special,” he said. “I thought, boy, that’s one cool kid.”

Recalling what Davison said in her letter inviting him to her graduation, Hughes told ABC: “She said words to the effect of, ‘I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for you and your crew’.”

But Hughes knew right from the moment she saved Davison’s life that was a special girl.

“She was the third person I’d pulled out of a fire in my career so I always say the third is the charm. That’s what my career and the fire service is all about,’” he said.

Turning emotional during her graduation, she said: “They’re happy tears.”
