Some pro athletes remember what it was like to be a kid. One such pro is Mitchell Marner, a right-winger for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

On Valentine’s Day, Mark Beretta and his wife were taking their daughter—a huge Leafs fan and Marner admirer in particular—to her first NHL game. Her hope was for Marner to “be her valentine,” and Dad set the stage by tweeting about this earlier in the day. Mitchell Marner took notice.

In the leadup to the game, the girl was a pressed against the glass with a sign that read: “Hey, Mitch!!!! Be My Valentine?!”

As the Leafs came out for warmups, Marner looked for the girl. Her sign also read: Fist Bump? Selfie? Puck?

When he spotted her and her sign, he scooped up a nearby puck, brought over and dropped it to her over the glass. The girl was ecstatic, but he wasn’t done yet. The star also accommodated her selfie request and gave her a semblance of a fist bump—at least as much as he could manage through the glass.

Later, when speaking to the press after the game, Marner mentioned the little girl: Look at those eyes! Too cute for words! Fans like that make playing the sport all the more sweat. There was a certain genuineness that will make you a fan even if you don’t root for the Leafs.

What could make this night even better for the girl and Marner? A win! And the Toronto Maple Leafs did indeed prove victorious over the Vegas Golden Knights 6-3.

This is a moment that the little girl will never forget. It was a great moment for a great sport. It was a great moment for Marner and the entire Beretta family. The wife looked overjoyed as she took the pic of her baby.

Of course, the only person who may have felt a bit ousted by the whole affair is Steph Lachance. She’s Marner’s girlfriend and actual Valentine. But he did all right by her. After the game, he tweeted out a cute apology, and we’re sure that even Steph would agree that it was all worth it.
