Giant Manta Ray Asks Diver To Help Save Her Life

A giant manta ray in Western Australia found itself in some serious trouble and sought out a familiar face for help.

Jake Wilton, a local snorkel guide, was diving near the Ningaloo Reef when he was approached by a giant manta ray. Jake noticed that the manta ray had a fishing hook protruding from the skin under its eye.

Jake cautiously approached the enormous animal several times to gauge how it would react to being approached by a human. It remained perfectly calm so Jake made multiple dives, and eventually successfully removed the hook with a pair of pliers.

If the hook stayed in her eye, it would have surely caused blindness or infection. These gentle giants are intelligent creatures, and Monty Halls who was there with Jake posted about the encounter on Facebook and wrote:

"It was an extraordinary half hour or so, and such a clear illustration that these animals have intelligence, trust, and a strong association with folks who treat them with respect."

In his post, Monty said that it wasn't his imagination that the manta was asking for Jake's help.
