Fans of the hit HBO television show Game of Thrones have been reacting with mixed feelings as the final season wraps up. While some fans commend the show’s progress, others are giving it the thumbs down. Those that don’t like the recently released episodes wish that HBO focused more on the exciting drama that attracted viewers in the initial seasons.

Game of Thrones was initially inspired by George R. R. Martin’s novels in the Song of Ice and Fire series. As the genius behind the novels (but not a full-time writer on the TV show) Martin seems to also have his own opinion of the show’s progress. Fans also got a glimpse into the production process as he voiced his opinions on how HBO handled the show.

Martin spoke with Rolling Stone for a recent interview and was specifically asked about the deviation of Sansa’s storyline from the book.

“Well, yeah — of course, you have an emotional reaction [to deviating from the original material]. I mean, would I prefer they do it exactly the way I did it? Sure.”

Although he wasn’t completely happy about the depiction of the storyline to screen, he admitted it was somewhat because of his own mistakes—Martin has been famously slow on the completion of the final books.

“Some of the deviation, of course, is because I’ve been so slow with these books. I really should’ve finished this thing four years ago — and if I had, maybe it would be telling a different story here.”

Rolling Stone went on to ask him about how he felt regarding the show ending. He was honest with his feelings and said,

“You know, it’s complex. I’m a little sad, actually. I wish we had a few more seasons. But I understand….I’m not angry or anything like that, but there’s a little wistfulness in me.”

He also referred to the showrunners David Benioff and Daniel Brett Weiss to say that it’s “fair” that they go on to do other projects and the GoT actors continue their careers to act in other roles.

Despite George R. R. Martin’s reservations about the show, there will certainly be a high audience viewership for the last episodes. Game of Thrones airs its final episode on May 19th.
