George Clooney once again broke new ground in June 2025. This time, the actor not only showcased his talent on the silver screen but also took it to the bright lights of Broadway. The Oscar-winning actor and director brought his acclaimed political drama “Good Night and Good Luck” to the stage. In a historic move, CNN also broadcast the performance live, marking a revolutionary moment in the relationship between Broadway and mainstream media. It also came on the heels of the 2025 broadcast of the Tony Awards.

“Good Night, and Good Luck” originally premiered as a film in 2005, directed by Clooney and co-written with Grant Heslov. The film, a black-and-white masterpiece, chronicled journalist Edward R. Murrow’s battle with Senator Joseph McCarthy during the height of the Red Scare. Critically acclaimed for its razor-sharp commentary on media responsibility and political courage, the film earned six Academy Award nominations. Reprising the role of Murrow, Clooney made his Broadway debut with the stage version of his acclaimed film.

Nearly two decades later, the story came to life in a new way. Clooney, 64, adapted and starred in the live TV version of the Tony-nominated play. The transition from film to stage was more than just a creative reinterpretation; it was a bold statement about the power of live performance in a time when truth and journalism are once again under siege. History was also being made as “Good Night and Good Luck” was broadcast live on CNN on June 7, 2025.

The live CNN broadcast of “Good Luck, and Good Night” marked the first time in history that a Broadway production has been simultaneously televised live on television. Clooney shared that he was excited to make history and believed that CNN was the ideal channel to achieve this.

“I can’t tell you how exciting it is to do something that’s never been done,” Clooney said in a statement.

“CNN is the perfect place to bring this story of courage to so many more people than we could have ever hoped. Live TV. No net. Buckle up, everyone,” he added.

Clooney was not the only one looking forward to this new age of collaboration between television and Broadway stage productions. The chairman and CEO of CNN, Mark Thompson, also offered a statement on the development.

“‘Good Night, and Good Luck’ is not just a celebration of a golden age in TV journalism,” he explained on the importance of the project.

He also added:

“It’s also about the importance of the free press and the need for strong news organizations to report the facts in a fair-minded way. That’s something we still care deeply about.”

The stage production of “Good Night and Good Luck” was directed by David Cromer and earned five Tony nominations. Although it was unable to win any awards on the night, the play remained critically acclaimed. The play also became the highest-grossing show in Broadway history and was the first to surpass a gross of $4 million in a single week.
